DATELINE ISRAEL—Thirty-
eight Atlanta youth observing
their first shabbat in Israel with
their own Kabbalat Service on
the shore of the Mediterranean,
in peaceful, hantuing Tzefat.
Thirty-eight spirited teenagers
emersed in the maggic of this
ancient center of Jewish Mys
ticism.
Thirty-eight members of the
“now generation” standing be
fore the Wall in silent medita
tion.
From their base in Tiberias
they tour the Galilee, the anci
ent synagogues, the tombs of
revered rabbis. Then comes the
time to move on to other places.
This time a Gadna camp in B’er
Ora, where the thirty-eight ex
perience first hand, together
with Israeli youth, the pre-mili
tary training which Israel pro
vides.
The sights, the sounds, the
heart, the soul of Israel will
these thirty-eight Jewish boys
and girls experience during
their seven week stay in Israel
under the guidance and tutel
age of Dr. Leon Spotts, execu
tive director of the Bureau of
Jewish Education.
Fortunate indeed, is the com
munity of Atlanta to have a
Bureau of Jewish Education
which is not only concerned
Dr. Bernard Kahn Named
Ga. "Optometrist of Year"
Dr. Bernard L. Kahn, of At
lanta was elected and installed
as president-elect of the Geor
gia Optometric Assn, at the
group’s 69th Annual Meeting
held recently at St. Simons
Island.
He was also honored at the
meeting in recognition of hav
ing been selected as Georgia’s
“Optometrist of the Year” for
1972.
Dr. Kahn served as secretary-
treasurer and vice president
prior to being elevated to the
new office. He has served as
president of the Fifth District
Optometric Society and headed
up the public affairs, aging and
subnormal vision committees of
the State group. He is chief of
staff, Ben Massell Optometric
Clinic in Atlanta, which has
served more than 15,000 charity
patients since it was founded
in 1967.
A past president of the At
lanta Lodge, B’nai B’rith, Dr.
Kahn was selected as the most
outstanding Lodge President in
Georgia in 1969. He is now pres
ident of the Georgia Association
of B’nai B’rith.
He has been instrumental in

and for the Atlanta Jewish Wel
fare Fund.
with the positive attitude of
our youth today, but through
such endeavors as the Atlan
ta Leadership Experiment in
Israel, is helping to develop
dedicated and educated Jewish
leaders for Atlanta’s tomorrow.
One young man summed it
all up in a letter to his parents,
“Dear Folks, Thank you for
sending me to Israel. It is an
experience I’ll never forget”

Mrs. Alex Lichtenheim of Stam
ford, Conn., at the Light’s re
cently completed 73 acre farm
near Gainesville. The Lights
plan to enjoy the “farm house”
for relaxation and entertaining.

Stephen Cowen, son of Mr.
and Mrs. David J. Cowen of At
lanta, graduated cum laude
from Harvard Law School in
June. Stephen, who attended
the Hebrew Academy of Atlan
ta, Northside High, and Emory
University, is on the staff of a
V/ashington, DC., law firm and
has taken up residence in the
Washington area.
