Drama, Humor, Thrills - - fliat’s Israel
little lVfe room flat in Beersheba
to spend an evening at the
movies. The box office could
not change their fifty Pound
note, so they broke it with the
purchase of a lottery ticket at
a nearby booth. They enjoyed
the movie — and the next day
their lottery number brought
them IL. 150,000.
HAIFA—Israel—a country of
history and thrills, drama and
humor, excitement and fun — a
country of the ever-unexpected.
For example, take a look at
what has been happening here
in recent months, almost as part
of the daily routine.
Politeness to Tourists: When
Hanan Zeitan, an El A1 em
ployee, seized the surviving Jap
anese terrorist, locked him in a
stranglehold and threw him to
the ground, Hanan’s training
came through, and he politely
asked the killer: “Are you a
passenger?”
He Lacked Party Support:
Yosef Nassr e-Din, a Druze res
ident of Daliat el-Carmel, wired
the recent Zionist Congress ask
ing that he be recognized as a
delegate bcause of his “com
plete identification with Zion
ism.”
Trade Union Consciousness:
Minister of Religions, Zerach
Warhaftig, told that in an effort
to combat begging at the Wes
tern Wall, he offered one of the
beggars a weekly payment

Marvin Botnick, President
equal to his “take” if the beggar
would stay away. Replied the
latter: "And what about over
time?”
Blame the Government: The
State prosecuted a case against
a matza company whose prod-
ducts had contained bits of dead
insects. But in Court it was
proved that it was the State it
self that had sold the bakery
the contaminated flour.
Better, Better, Best: When a
Haifa mother gave birth to trip
lets at the local private Better
Hospital, the name of the insti
tution was considered quite ap
propriate. Dr. Better did not at
tend the birth; the physician in
charge was Dr. Dora Best.
Unexpected Guests: Micha
Noy, Israel’s television chef, had
no sooner finished demonstrat
ing a recipe, than the studio
phone rang. An excited woman
at the other end of the line
asked if she could have the
portions which she had just
seen him take out of the oven;
her husband was bringing home
unexpected guests for dinner.
They are Not Storks: The vil
lage of Or Yehuda, adjacent to
Lydda Airport, has the highest
birthrate in Israel. One expla
nation: noise of the planes keeps
the inhabitants awake at night.
Bar Mitzva — Tax Deducti
ble: A Tel Aviv father claimed
a business tax deduction for
his son’s Bar Mitzva expenses.
He had to invite ail his custom
ers and clients or his business
would have suffered. He was
granted a deduction of 30% of
the cost of the party.
New Export Opportunities:
An Israeli delegation in deepest
Africa came across a native
tribe who were hanging cans of
Israel preserves from their ears
to help elongate the lobes.
Encore! Encore! When a group
of students at Bar Han Univer
sity complained that they had
to take certain exams over
again in the fall, Dr. Baruch
Kazan, their teacher, explained.
“We were so impressed with

m£ars "Humst oue:
your answers the first time that
we simply had to invite you
back for an encore!”
Beyond the Call of Duty:
From Russia comes the story of
the time when there was a seri
ous shortage of building mater
ials and stone of all kinds. When
a man died they would even
take the name plate off his door
to put up as a tombstone. Hence
it was not surprising to find a
sign on one grave: “Dr. Jacob
Idelson, Gynecologist. Receives
patients daily between 4 and 7.”
No Small Change: Yehudit
and Yossi Feldman left their

No wonder our long-range investors—stable,
conservative citizens—feel the glow of getting a
good thing.
We promise 6% interest on a minimum savings
deposit of $5,000, a minimum term of 2 years, no
matter what dips the economy suffers.
Daily compounding of interest makes that 6%
actually yield 6.1 8%. In long-range security, that extra
.18% gets very important. As does the guarantee.
We deliver other nice things, too, for our
savings customers. Like savings insurance up to
$20,000. A free safe-deposit box ($5,000 minimum
