JFCB Presents Sex Education Wa,cr Work9 Si,e
For JWV
Program For Ahavath Achim Auxiliary Meeting
“Growing Up Is Not Just
Getting Bigger,” a special
“Change of Life” program held
recently for pre-teen and early-
teen twirls of the Ahavath Achim
Synagogue’s religious school, is
expected to be the forerunner of
a series of similar programs for
elementary and high school age
youngsters at AA and other
Atlanta synagogues.
The May presentation,
attended by 37 girls and nine
mothers, was arranged and
conducted by the Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau as an
expansion of its Family Life
Education Program.
Two health education films on
loan from the Georgia
Department of Human
Resources were shown. The
first, “Human Growth and
Development,” was followed by
a question and answer session,
with Dr. Michael Levine, a
pediatrician, fielding the
questions. These ranged from
how twins are formed to more
personal questions dealing
with anxieties and concerns
of the viewers.
Prior to showing of the first
film, Leonard L. Cohen, director
of social services at the JFCB,
spoke briefly on the
physiological, psychological and
social implications of sexual
development during
adolescence.
After the second film, entitled
“Menstruation,” the mothers
were invited to meet with Mr.
Cohen while the girls remained
with Dr. Levine mo thwy^mlnht
ask additional questions more
freely in the event any had been
inhibited by the presence of their
mothers.
Initially, the program was
conceived by AA’s youth director
Brahm Betterman, who
contacted the Jewish Family and
Children’s Bureau as the logical
resource. This resulted in
further communication between
Mr. Betterman and community
leaders involved in sex education
such as Russell Richardson,
former executive director of the
Planned Parenthood Clinic ; Mrs.
CTiarlotte Wilen and Dr. William
Mason of the Health, Education
and Welfare department. Mrs.
Elaine Levin is the coordinator
of the JFCB’s Family Life
Education Program and worked
closely in setting up the youth
program.
According to Mr. Betterman,
because of the often
controversial response to sex
education programs, a letter had
be*m sent to the parents to
reassure them of its
acceptability.
According to Mr. Cohen, the
success of this program was
rewarding on two counts. “First
of all, the enthusiasm of the
young people and of those
mothers present indicated
desirability of further
exploration with other young
groups. And second, it showed
again the results of cooperation
between the professional staff of
this community’s family agency
and other community
organizations in building a
healthier community thorough
prevention and education.”
