years claims 6000 members in the
Atlanta Lawn Tennis Assn, to say
nothing of those unaffiliated
players.
At the Progressive Club, players
range from 8 years of age into the
70’s and keep the courts (and Ms.
Newman) busy in even the coldest
weather.
Ms. Newman credits the ALTA,
an affiliate of the United States
Lawn Tennis Assn., with being the
biggest influence in getting tennis
“on the road” in Atlanta. She'
says, “The ALTA has encouraged
every tennis center, public or
private, every private club, even
neighborhood courts to organize
teams for competition with one
another on the proper levels.
Interest peaks in the eight-week
spring competitive season which
began in mid-March. Two ladies'
teams, two men's teams, a boys’
junior and a girls’ junior team are
participating from the Progressive
Club.
“The Dyno-Mites” ladies low C
team is captained by Louise Beck
and Patsy Weinman, with Pauline
Cohen, Reva Greenberg, Helen
Hahn, Jean Shaw, Miriam Weins
tein, Lynn Halpern, Sharon
Hamelburg and Linda Miller.
“The Mini-Mites” ladies low C
is captained by Gloria Berke and
Leona Gartner, with Myra
Abrams, Claire Baron, Ila Galan-
ti, Sadele Gottler, Rita Goldstein,
Elaine Singer, Phyllis Solomon,
Arlene Peck and Sandy Nater-
man.
Charles (Buddy) Shainker cap

Bruce Beck, Saul Codner, Sol H.
Greenberg, Gerald C. Horowitz,
Leon Novak, Milton Pergament,
Jack Rosenberg, Howard Sim
mons, Melvin Warshaw, Harry
Baron and David Bcrkman.
“The Progressive Jazzers, a
men's middle B team, is captained
by Howard Halpern, with Gerald
Blonder, Abner Cohen, Frank
Hahn, Nathan Lipton, Donald
Miller, Ross B. Newman, Len J.
Seligman and Robert Trauner.
Players have to earn their spot
on a team and practice at least
twice a week. According to Fran
Newman, their dedication is such
that once after a heavy rain “the

Mothers serve as captains of the
junior teams as well as drivers.
Phyllis Joffre captains the Boys
Junior Aces. Team members are
Danny and David Bogart, Scott

Captains of the Girls Junior
Dueces are Molly Shure and Reva

Cohen, Lisa Greenberg, Sharon
Rosenberg, Cathy and Jody Shure,
Leslie Diamond and Robyn
Greenberg.
In addition to the Progressive
Club, both the Standard Club and
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center are extremely active and
successful in the ALTA program.
Public and private schools and
parks and recreation centers have
ALTA programs.
Claiming that approximately
half of the Progressive Club
members are playing tennis, Fran
Newman points out that for many
it marks their first exposure to
athletic participation or team
programs. “The first time they
walk out on the court is the first
time they have held a hall.” They
say, “Fran, I have no idea what to
do . . . what's it all about?"
The tennis explosion hit Atlanta
about two years ago. Some have
taken private lessons as a lark,
caught the tennis bug and have
become incredible “tennis bums.”
Part of the sport’s popularity may
stem from the fact that this is a
sport in which women can be
equally proficient and active.
“Just ask Bobby Riggs.”
At the Club, women play only
doubles so many more can be ac
commodated. Ninety per cent of
women are said to prefer doubles
because it is not as exhausting. It is
more a game of strategy than
brawn.
Ms. Newman came to the
Progressive Club two years ago
after seven years playing on the
USLTA circuit. She achieved top
ranking in the state and Southern
Regional Division. She herself is a
relative late comer to the game,
taking up the sport when her first
child was in first grade. Now she
finds that many of those she
coaches come to the game at a
similar stage of life. “There are
very few limits as to how far you
can go in the game, no matter at
what age you start.”
At the Standard Club, Rick
Lynch is the pro with an extremely
active program and thirteen courts.
Nancy Fox heads the program at
the AJCC, with four courts. Last'
week there was a cross match
between various Standard Club,
AJCC and Progressive Club teams.
Ms. Newman and each of her
approximately 250 tennis players
are looking forward eagerly to the
time when the Progressive Club
moves tp its new facilities in
JSorthwest Atlanta, where heavy
emphasis is being placed on the
tennis program. At the moment,
the Club’s pro is hoping for nine
courts instead of the present three,
with room for expansion and
possibly interior facilities.
