Tens Of Thousands Denied Jewish Edcuation In France
can only hope that it is not too
late."
After 30 years of steady
progress, the growth of Jewish
education in France has come to a
virtual standstill because of the
lack of funds for new buildings and
better-trained teachers.
This was reported by Stanley
Abramovitch, consultant on
Jewish Education for the Joint
Distribution Committee, on his
return from a tour of French
Jewish schools.
“Unless the French Jewish com
munity undertakes an immediate
effort to provide added facilities,
thousands of North African
youngsters from deeply religious
families will be lost to Judaism,"
Mr. Abramovitch warned.
He noted that, in addition to
technical aid, the JDC still uses a
limited amount of the funds it

receives from the United Jewish
Appeal to help support
educational programs in France.
These include some 20 full-time
Jewish schools with an enrollment
of 4,000 children, he said. A
number of them have boarding
facilities for pupils from outlying
communities. They are located
mainly in and around Paris and in
Strasbourg and Marseilles.
Another 18,000 children are served
by Talmudei Torah scattered all
over the country.
But an estimated 40-50,000
Jewish children of school age
receive no Jewish instruction at all,
Mr. Abramovitch pointed out.
"The rapid expansion of the full
time schools is an immediate and
pressing problem," he said. “Until
now, these schools have somehow
managed to keep taking in more
pupils even though it has meant
severe overcrowding and a heavy
burden on the teaching staff. But
the limit has been reached. Hun
dreds of children are being turned
away.”
Mr. Abramovitch pointed out
that the great majority of the
pupils in French Jewish schools to
day are of North African origin.
Their education and family life
were completely disrupted when
they were transplanted to France’s
highly industrialized society.
“Uprooted from the traditional,
closely-knit North African Jewish
life, they tend to drift away from
their families, lose their Jewish
identity and fall prey to assimila
tion and intermarriage.”
The JDC educator emphasized
that the situation would be much
worse had it not been for JDC’s
massive postwar reconstruction ef
forts and the capital investment
program which JDC and the
Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany began in
1955. This enabled the French
community to lay the foundations
of a comprehensive network of full

and part-time schools, he said.
“However, successive waves of
immigration, starting in the late
I950’s soon outstripped the ability
of the communities to create ad
ditional educational facilities,"
Mr. Abramovitch continued.
“These refugee movements, main
ly from North Africa, nearly
doubled the French Jewish popula
tion in a few years. Today it
stands at about 550,000 and is still
growing "
Mr. Abramovitch praised the ef
forts of the French Jewish social
service agencies and religious
bodies to meet the newcomers’
overwhelming cultural and
educational needs. He also stress
ed that the JDC made available its
own and Claims Conference funds
to build dozens of multi-purpose
community centers with facilities
for synagogues and Talmudei
Torah. In many cases, he noted,
the newcomers improvised their
