Not visiting Israel in the next
few weeks — or months?
Next best thing in Atlanta is a
trip to the Prado and a lingering
browse-see-shop stop at a place
modestly labeled “Dizengoff
Street.”
Wares reminiscent of shopping
around the bustling DizengofJ
Square in that special indigenous
area located in a mid-East city
better known as Tel Aviv.
Jewelry shops where spangle
and dangle the glistening rings,
bracelets and necklaces treasures
crafted by Yemenite artisians as
deftly and varied as certain women
intricately create needlework.
Only instead of threads of woo! or
silk, they use silver strands and
liny designed discs or squares.
Sometimes set with tiny, azure
Elat stones or coral.
And art galleries, shops
specializing in glass, or ceramic
items. And other places with coins
or antiquities.
Well Cary Merlin has assembled
a shop at the Prado out Roswell
Road with items to gladden the
heart, to evoke glimpses of a wife
or daughter, or husband wearing
or sharing the pleasure of possess
ing some special gift.
And as likely as not, there's
lilting Israel music in the
background.
Browse or buy. The variety of
choices and prices offer
possibilities for fitting the
purchase into a wide range of
limitations.
Mr. Merlin was showing the
antique-looking bottles of Israel-
made perfume.Bat Sheba for

for men.
What I need is not something to
make me smell good, but
something to give me “mazal," we
mused. I’ve got that too, he said.
He produced a box whose content

We demurred trying it out, hav

probably succumb to the first one.
We moved on to the art racks.
Delightful lithos from such

But what set our wonder buds a-
flutter were the rings, some
gloriously massive and antique and
so individually crafted. Each seem
ed definitely one-of-a-kind. Prices
however did not indicate such ex
clusiveness.
Some of the rings and bracelets
beauteously set off such semi
precious gems as moonstones,
smoky quartz, citrones, elat

bloodstones. The mounts
fascinating in filigree, textured

Merlin knows the craftsman in
most instances. He pointed out the
variety of rings created by an old

Many unusual items came from

marketing purposes by Ruth

A most popular neck piece item
comes from the Jacobi brothers.
This particular glamorous and
folksy pretty contains a massive
copper coin from the Turkish
Government era in the Holy Land.
From this major pendant dangle
three smaller Turkish coins con
nected with gracious links.
Special fascination surrounds
the lamps on sale from the Hero-
dian period — as far back as 2500.
And more recent Bizantine lamps
and the piece de resistance — if an

Israel Plans Nuclear
Power Plant by 1984
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Israel
is to have a nuclear power plant in
operation by 1984 which it is
hoped will produce some 15 per
cent of its electricity requirements.
The decision to go ahead with
plans for the plant was taken by
the Cabinet at its weekly meeting
April 27. The plant will have a
600-megawatt capacity and will
probably run on enriched uranium
which Israel will purchase from the
US.
Israel's Electric Corporation
signed a contract last year with the
U.S. atomic energy authority
enabling it to buy the vital fuel
from the U.S. Following the
Cabinet decision, the Electric Cor
poration will open concrete
negotiations with a number of
potential American suppliers to
decide which of them is to be
awarded the contract to build the
plant.
When President Nixon visited
the Mideast last June, he held out
an offer to both Israel and Egypt
of a nuclear power plant. But sub
sequent tentative negotiations with
both states were shelved for
various reasons and a top officials
said here Israel's planned plant
was "not necessarily" connected
with what was then Nixon’s offer.
The official, Ram Haviv of the
commerce and Industry Ministry,
said Israel had been contemplating
ordering a plant for some two
years now — but initial planning
had been delayed due to the Yom
Kippur War. All the basic studies
had by now been completed,
however, and following the
Cabinet go-ahead, the Electric
Corporation could embark on
practical negotiations with
suppliers.
The plant, he said, would pro
bably be situated in Nitzanim, on
the coast midway between Ashdod
and Ashkelon. It had to be near
the sea, he explained, because of
the huge quantities of water need
ed for cooling.

Mr. Merlin leaves this weekend
on a shopping tour of Israel. He’ll
be away most of May. Items he
arranges to buy will be arriving
somewhat later.
Meanwhile, there’s enough to
provide pleasant shopping for the
esoteric, the sentimental — or, just
the average run-of-the-mill
curious. Several trips in fact to
really enjoy.
What’s missing is the pita and
felafel available at Dizengoff in
Tel Aviv for nibbling as visitors ex
amine and acquire trinkets or
souvenirs. Soon a couple of
Israelis will fix that. They intend to
