Brandeis Book Sale
OpensMay 17 in Buckhead
“A bargain bonanza in reading”
will get underway at 7 p.m. Satur
day, May 17, when Brandeis
University National Women’s
Committee opens its annual Used
Book Sale. The event is being held
under the “Big Top” in Sears
Buckhead parking lot.
The ninth annual sale will con
tinue through Wednesday, May 21
with hours Sunday through
Wednesday from 9.:30 a m. until
9:30 p.m.
Over 40,000 books will go on
sale, including fiction, religious
books, biographies, children’s
books, even some brand new art
books, all at a fraction of original
cost.
Proceeds from the five-day sale
will be used to buy new books for

Volunteers have been working
for months to collect and sort
books. Since these volunteers are
not trained bibliophiles, rare
editions have been said to slip by
and onto the sales counters. For
this reason, opening night usually
finds collectors and book sellers in
the crowd.
The opening night gala is the
only time there is a charge, with
$1.50 donation asked.

president and chairman of the
book committee. Working with

Mrs. Mel Weiss, processing; Mrs.

Shabbat.

Tay-Sachs Blood
Screenings Begin
Over 650 people participated in
the first tay-Sachs Disease
Prevention Program blood test
screening Sunday, May 4, at the
Atlanta Jewish .Community
Center.
Two additional screenings are
scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 5-
10 p.m.; and Sunday, May 18, 9
a m. to 5 p.m. at the AJCC.
The blood test screenings to
detect carriers of Tay-Sachs dis
ease, the genetic disorder found
predominantly in Jews, are coor
dinated by the Atlanta Section,
National Council of Jewish
Women in conjunction with the
Emory University School of
Medicine, Department of
Pediatrics, Division of Medical
Genetics.
