Special To
The Southern Israelite
Passover, as Well as other Jewish
holidays, is traditionally a time for
families to come together. What of
people who have no family in the
community? Are Atlantans too
busy and unaware that there are
the lonely and the isolated in our
midst?
The answer is “No". Atlantans
are not too busy to care. Our com
munity has usually responded with
concern and caring and this
Passover ’proved to be no excep
tion. Through its Outreach
Program, the Jewish Family and
Children's Bureau reached out into
the community to locate senior
adults who would be alone this
Passover and brought them
together with volunteer host
families.
Members of Woman’s
American ORT and the syn
agogues response was heartwar
ming and also heartrending.
“Where have you been all the
other years I’ve been alone?” ask
ed one senior adult in response to
the offer of an invitation.
In addition, the Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau, the syn
agogue, and National Council of
Jewish Women helped to locate
host families for the Russian new
comers in our midst. Thus,
through the combined efforts of
many people and organizations,
the lonely and the stranger were
welcomed by the community.
David Goldwasser, vice presi
dent of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation’s Social Service
Department, and Max Ritten-
baum, vice chairman, indicated
their "pleasure that the Jewish
Family and Children’s Bureau is
able to continue its efforts and to
respond increasingly to the com
munity needs.”

David Benator Earns
National Scout Honor
Scout David Benator of Troop
73, sponsored by Congregation Or
VeShalom in Atlanta, was recently
awarded the National Award of
Merit for his quick action in an
emergency situation at school last
April.
A classmate and friend, David
Falkenstein, accidentally pushed
his arm through a windowpane and
severed a main artery. “While
everyone was in a state of panic,
David Benator calmly and ef
ficiently took the proper
procedures to stop the bleeding un-
til medical assistance was
available," said his Scoutmaster.
Fortunately, and to the credit of
an active Scout troop, David had
just a few weeks previous to the ac
cident, studied the first aid merit
badge. When the time came, David
was right in line with the Scouting
motto "Be Prepared" which is
testimony that the Scouting con
cept is still as valid as ever.
Because of David’s quick action
and cool headedness in preventing
a tragedy, he not only received the
William H. Beck Award for
meritorious action awarded to
Georgia Boy Scouts, but also the
rarely given National Award of
Merit.
Josiah V. Benator is Troop 73
Scoutmaster.
