Parents of Tay-Sachs Baby Active in NCJW Program
we've learned that no one is special
and it can happen to anyone. Lear
ning if you are a carrier, and
preventing the birth of a Tay-
Sachs baby and the heartache that
goes with it. is well worth the small
amount of time and cost in
volved," said the Howies.
The final NCJW Tay-Sachs
blood test screening will be held
Sunday, May 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
at the Atlanta Jewish Community

The importance of learning if
you are a carrier of Tay-Sachs dis
ease unfortunately does not seem
great until you) family is personal
ly affected by the tragedy of a baby
bom with the disease.
Barbara and Stanley Howie of
Southeast Atlanta faced such a
tragedy in 1970 when their
daughter, Shannon, was born with
Tay-Sachs disease. Now, Mr. and
Mrs. Howie are volunteers with
the National Council of Jewish
Women’s Tay-Sachs Disease
Prevention Program.
The Howies are encouraged by
the increased ’ awareness of Tay-
Sachs and, most importantly, how
to prevent it. “We loved Shannon
just as we love our two healthy
daughters, and we have no second
thoughts about how we dealt with
the experience,” commented Mrs.
Howie. “But the tragedy of Tay-
Sachs can be prevented, and that’s
why the NCJW.screening program
is so important,” she added.
The Howies had no prior history
of Tay-Sachs in their families, nor
had they heard of the disease
before April, 1971, when they
learned Shannon was affected. By ’
then, Mrs. Howie was pregnant
again, so the couple went to the
Johns Hopkins University Tay-
Sachs research and testing facility
in Baltimore
Doctors performed an am
niocentesis on Mrs. Howie, and
results indicated the fetus was not
afflicted with Tay-Sachs. A second
amniocentesis before the birth of
their third daughter also indicated
a normal fetus.
“One of the important things for
couples of Tay-Sachs babies to
realize — and for “high-risk”
couples who want to have children
— is that they shouldn't give up;
amniocentesis is almost 100 per
cent accurate, so when the proper
precautions are taken, high-risk
couples can have healthy babies as
my husband and I did after Shan
non,” Mrs. Howie stressed.
The Howies learned of the
NCJW prevention program and
the newly-created Emory Univer
sity Tay-Sachs testing facility in
January, 1975, through a physician
at St. Joseph’s Infirmary, where
Stanley Howie works as a medical
assistant. Since that time, they
have been actively involved in the
prevention program.
Barbara and Stanley Howie
have experienced the tragedy of
Tay-Sachs and are aware,
firsthand, of the need for detection
of carriers and active participation
in a prevention program. “We
never imagined that something like
this would ever happen to us, but
