tour completed by the Israel sent
over its Olympic hoop squad under
the aegis of the United States
Committee Sports for Israel,
returns home with the best record
ever, 7-1.
The competition this time was
the hardest ever arranged for the
Israelis and they handled the
challenge very well. Captain Tal
Brody and his 11 teammates
knocked over such American
collegiate basketball stalwprts as
Siena, Villanova, Sir John Fisher,
University of St. Louis, John
Carroll, Trinity of Texas and the
United States Naval Academy.
The eight games were played in
a period of (wo weeks this year
entailing a hardship upon the
durable Israelis who traveled from
Rochester to Texas and back in
order to complete this schedule
which was made possible through a
special dispensation granted by the
NCAA.
Normally teams in the NCAA
which do not participate in post
season tournaments must stop
playing basketball at the conclu
sion of their regular schedule. In
the case of the Israelis, exceptions
were made so that all of the eight
teams were granted the necessary
authority to extend their schedule
time for the additional game
against the Israelis.
In the case of the United States
Naval Academy, they had stopped
practicing two weeks prior to the
game with the boys from the Holy
Land, but they resumed their
sessions and put up a fine battle
against the more experienced
Israelis who were down by three
points with six minutes to play.
What marked a new record for
the United States Naval Academy
was the fact that the attendance
was the largest ever in history. The
Naval Academy gymnasium holds
6000 people, but 8000 fans were
squeezed in to see the game on a
Sunday afternoon.
All this was made possible
through the efforts of vice-
president Alan Sherman of United
States Committee Sports for
Israel who saw to it there was no

admission charge involved and
mailed out some 1500 letters to
Jewish fraternal organizations,
synagogues, temples and societies.
As a result, buses came in from all
over the East, and probably for the
first time in its history the Naval
Academy witnessed fans wearing
yamulkas and saw bearded Jews
with long payis.
The only game in which the
Israelis suffered a defeat was
against the highly rated University
of Houston. The game was played
in the Hofheinz Pavillion and the
Owls quickly shqwed their
superiority by dominating the
boards. The Israelis just couldn’t
cope with the three monsters
Houston fielded and just about
surrendered every offensive and
defensive rebound.

Cabaret Scores
At Workshop
Those creative and talented
folks at the Workshop Theatre on
Monroe Drive appear to be follow
ing success with success.
“Cabaret” opened Tuesday
night with every sign of repeating
the long run of “Broadway Times
Two.”
Those few in the audience who
hadn’t seen “Cabaret” before, on
stage or on screen, were particular
ly stunned by the first act climax.
Handling of the transition of
“Tomorrow Belongs to Me" from
a haunting song of hope into a
Nazi pep song and lively party
guests replaced by brown-shirted
black arm-banded youth, had an
almost surrealistic yet frightening,
quality.
To the production’s credit, no
attempt was made to copy Liza
Minelli’s “Sally Bowles”. Cathy
Baker made the role her own.
Robert Ray, the Emcee, brought
the house down in the chorus line
number.
Probably the most sensitive per
formance was that of Sandra
Ellenburg-Dorsey, as Fraulein
Schneider as she breaks her
engagement to her Jewish fiance
“because I’m a survivor ... If I
fight and I lose, tomorrow doesn’t
exist for me.”
Donn Key as Herr Schultz and
Vicki Tabaka as Fraulein Kost,
must be mentioned.

this game since they were in
France playing for the Maccabi
Tel Aviv team in the European
quarter finals, but had these two
court stars been playing, it would
have made Little or no difference.
The Owls showed why they were
rated among the top 20 colleges
during the past season and
probably could have piled up a
much, much larger score than they
did against the visitors. As it was
they won by some 16 points with
their second team playing the
greater part of the second half.
Coach Guy Lewis of Houston, a
■ former United States Maccabi
team coach! has a fond spot in his
heart for the State of Israel and
did not want to humiliate the
visitors. However, with a 6’ 11 ”
and 6’10” combination breaking
up front, Lewis’ aggregation had
no trouble in handling all
rebounds, consequently coaching it
to an easy victory.
The game in Houston was made
possible through the efforts of
Robert Hecht, regional vice-
president, United States Com
mittee Sports for Israel, who is one
of the owners together with J.
Livingston Kosberg of the Israel
Sabras, the professional team in
the European Professional Basket
ball League.
Speaking of the Sabras, after a
poor start in which the team got
off last in the E.P.B.L. competi
tion, the Sabras moved up steadily
and after winning eight straight
moved into first place in the pro
league. An injury to key player

by the Board of Directors of the
European Professional Basketball
