General Haim Laskov, the of
ficial Ombudsman of the Israel
Defense Forces and its former
Chief of Staff, who, as one of his
country’s most distinguished
military figures served as a
member of the Agranat Commis
sion that studied the Yom Kippur
War, will be the guest speaker at
the Atlanta-Israel Dinner of State.
The event, urider the auspices of
the Atlanta Israel Bond Com
mittee, will take place on May 31
at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
General Laskov has been
designated by his government to
represent them on this occasion
and participate in the ceremonies
of the presentation of the Prime
Minister’s Award to distinguished
humanitarian Sidney Feldman.
As a member of the five-man
commission headed by Shimon
Agranat, president of Israel’s
Supreme Court, General Laskov
participated in the inquiry and
deliberations over a 14-month
period concerning the opening
stages of the Yom Kippur War.
The commission’s 1,500-page
report was completed on January
30, 1975.
Former Director General of the
Israel Port Authority, a post he
held until late 1970, General
Laskov was for many years chiefly
responsible for the progress and
expansion of his country’s seaports
and dock facilities, key elements of
Israel's shipping industry as a vital
lifeline for wofld trade.
General LaS&ov, who served as
Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense
Forces for three years, was only 38
when he assumed that post in 1957.
Despite his young age, he had
already established himself as a
brilliant military planner and tacti
cian. When he was still a student at
the famed Reali Secondary School
in Haifa, he managed to absorb
enough combat experience to be
placed in charge osf the training of
leaders of the Haganah, the
defense force created by the Jewish
settlers in the years before the es
tablishment of the State of Israel.
During World War II, he rose to

Jewish Brigade in Italy. His
greatest military exploits were
achieved in Israel’s War of
Independence and the Sinai Cam
paign.
In the former, he commanded a
battalion in Operation Nahshon
which cleared the road to
Jerusalem in March, 1948, and
thus enabled food, water and

defenders of that besieged city. He
also led an armored column in the
bitter battle against the Arab
stronghold at Latrun.
Before the Sinai Campaig.
General Laskov served as chief of
the Training Command of the
Israel Army, and as commander of
the Israel Air Force. Then, after
two years of study at St.
Anthony’s College at Oxford, he
was appointed Deputy Chief of
