Evev Duo Plans May 25 Concert
GREENSPANI) AM) GOODFRIENI)
Atlanta’s David Goodfriend and
Michael Greenspan (the Erev Duo)
will give a concert of Israeli and in
ternational folk music on Sunday,
May 25, at 8:00 p.m. at the Atlan
ta Jewish Community Center.
The concert will be a kick-off
event for a fall tour. The Erev Duo
are contributing 15 percent of the
proceeds to United Jewish Appeal
in their effort to showcase Jewish
musical culture to a wide audience.
David Goodfriend and Michael
Greenspan have been performing
together in the Atlanta area for
one and a half years. Their reper
toire blends new and traditional
Yiddish and Israeli folk songs with
the music of Russia, Greece,
Roumania, Yugoslavia, and many
other lands. With the use of guitar,
mandolin, accordion, and recorder
flute they recreate the original
character of the songs they sing.
"Their arrangements are fresh
and spirited and not only do they
inspire audience participation, but
also they have a broad appeat for
all ages," according to one of their
fans.
The May 25 concert is being
given to help raise funds for the
proposed fall tour. Since Atlanta is
home base for the duo, Erev isask-

HOT GEFILTE FISH MOLD
The Shavuot holiday is here,
and I have for you this week
something really unusual — a
dairy version of gefilte fish, made
into a mold. It comes from a friend
in Cleveland. Mrs. Eta Poliak.
4 lbs. ground fish (pike, whitefish,
carp or buffalo)
G pint sweet cream
4 eggs, separated
Salt, pepper to taste
2 medium grated onions
2 rounded tblsps. bread crumbs or
mat/o meal
Mix all ingredients together ex
cept egg whites, which are beaten
stiffly and added last. Pack into
large, well-greased mold. Place
into larger pan (half filled with
water) and bake, foil covered, in
325-degree oven for two hours.
Unmold and serve hot.

Ma’alot: One Year Later
by JAY C. and SHEILA JACOBSON
Ma’alot.
the name conjures up visions of
young bodies, ripped and bleeding.
Of screaming ambulances and
flashes of gunfire reflpcted in hang
ing plasma bottles. On May 15,
1974, Ma’alot suddenly put in an
appearance on the map of Israel, a
bright red splash in the emerald
Galilee.
Ma’alot.
They’ve cleaned up the
bloqdstains and repaired the
shattered windows in the Netiv
Meir School. Fist-sized holes,
punched in an outside wall by
heavy machine gun fire, still re
main. Swallows nest in them now.
The children don’t talk about
the massacre. But the soldiers
stationed in the schoolyard are
watchful, unsmilingly alert, deter
mined that the disaster will never
reoccur.
People are beginning to go out
at night again. They lock their
doors, they take their children
along. They stay together in
groups for safety. But they go out.
Ma’alot, one year later But the
great problems of daily existence
still weigh heavily on its people.
* * *
Ma’alot is home to 4,500 peo
ple, a village of 800 dwellings. To
day, 1,600 new housing units are
on the way up. Who will occupy
them?
“We only need about 100
apartments for young couples,”
says Eliahu Ben-Ya’akov, head of
the Town Council, "and another
100 for large families now living in
overcrowded conditions. That
leaves 1,400 units — enough for
6,000 newcomers."
Where are they?
Ma’alot desperately needs live-
in teachers, doctors, other
professionals. The town is crying
for academicians and skilled
workers to come and settle, to
raise the living standard, improve
the cultural level. There is room
today for 1,000 Israelis, 5,000 new
immigrants — a sorely needed >
shot-in-the-arm for a stagnating
community.
School kids, future hope of any
self-sustaining town, drop out at a
high rate. The local high school is
non-academic, a second-rate trade
school where 50 youngsters play at
learning, in an educationally sub
standard situation. The few who
care about their schooling go to
Haifa or Nahariya, imposing a
large financial sacrifice on already

overburdened parents. The rest
leave school at the end of eighth
grade, as soon as the law allows.
Sometimes they go to work in one
of the local factories; more often
they sit and watch the lampposts
rusting. Too many leave home for
the cities at 15 of 16, making their
way in menial jobs, or — sadly —
hs petty criminals or prostitutes. A
few make good. Nobody ever com
es back. •
It is not surprising thqt Mayor
Ben-Ya’akov is bitter. “Ma’alot
needs salesmen!”, he proclaims.
“We need people to sell im
migrants the idea of settling here.
This is the Galilee — the finest,
greenest, most beautiful part of
Israel.”
The Mayor feels very strongly
about the obligations of Jewish
youth in the Diaspora. "Young
Jews from America and the West
should become personally involved
in Israel, particularly Northern
Israel. And, of course, con
tributing money through the UJA
and other Jewish organizations is
very important."
Eliahu Ben-Ya’akov is not the
only deeply concerned denizen of
Ma’alot. American-born Bernika
Silverstein, head nurse in the town
clinic, feels that there has been
some improvement over the past
year. “We saw a lot of emotional
troubles after the disaster,” she
says, "but they are beginning to
recede. Last year, dormant
problems, catalyzed by the shock,
came boiling up — now, the com
munity's basic good health is
beginning to show." Like the
Mayor, Bernika feels that the
town's situation can be improved
by accelerating the pace of
development.
Following the disaster,
awareness of Ma’alot and its dif
ficulties exploded into the world's
conscience. After the shooting was
over, reporters turned to the
history of the community for
background. Its needs came to
light; the response of the Israel
Government, of world Jewry, even
of nonsectarian organizations, was
swift — and welcome. Things
started to happen which make liv-
