that a person who is in a dying con
dition is regarded as being a live
person in all respects » The
Talmud (tractc Shabbat 151b)
states that one who even closes the
eyes of such a person is compared
to one who commits murder. Some
claim that the practice of
euthanasia usurps the priority
which is God’s, i.e. the decision of
life and death, based upon the
Biblical phrase: “I kill and make
alive" (Deuteronomy 32:39).
Only the “author" of life is
allowed to write the closing
chapter. In this vein it is to be
noted that once a person has been
judged to have his death con
sidered as imminent (e g. a matter
of a day or so) then artificial
means of sustaining his life may be
removed. This does not mean that
medication may be suspended,
however.
Before granting any allowances,
every case must be judged on its
own merit. There are some who
claim that the reason we do not
rely completely upon the evalua
tion of a human physician to con
sider the patient as good as dead is
that no human being is perfect in
his judgement and thus a life that
might have had a slight chance to
recover might be snuffed out.
QUESTION: On what do Jews
base their conviction that the Jews
of the exiled countries will in
evitably be returned to Israel?
ANSWER: The basis for this
belief is in the Bible. In the book of
Deuteronomy (30:3) it is written
that the Almighty “will return and
gather thee from all the peoples,
where the Lord, thy God has dis
persed thee." The prophet Isaiah
wrote(Isaiah 11:12): "And He will
assemble the exiled of Israel."
Similar statements are found in
other books of the Prophets (e.g.,
Ezekiel 20:34). This promise is
regarded i as a basic part of the
covenant that exists between the
Jewish people and the Almighty.
QUESTION: Why does Jewish
tradition require that some words
of Torah learning be expressed and
discussed at the table when one
eats?
ANSWER: It is this practice
which supposedly makes the
difference between eating as a
animal function and eating as a
human enterprise. Animals have
little else in mind when they con
sume their food. Man, an intellec
tual being, an image of the
Almighty, raises his physical ac
tivity to an intellectual and
spiritual level by adding words of
culture and inspiration to his
mealtime experience.
