B’nai B’rith Votes to Hold 1978 Convention in Toronto
HOUSTON — B’nai B'rith’s
board of governors, in an “ap
preciative response" to the Cana
dian government’s cancellation of
a United Nations conference in
Toronto that would have included
representatives of the terrorist
Palestine Liberation Organization,
voted to convene its own 1978 in
ternational convention in that city.
Enthusiasm for a Canadian site
came as a reaction to a report by
Max Shechter of Toronto, a B’nai
B’rith vice president, on Canada’s
unwillingness to host a UN con
ference on crime prevention
because of the PLO presence as
observers.

man, said poems in Yiddish-and
English by the slain authors were
read by concert artist Theodore
Bikel and members of Yugntruph,
a Yiddish group. He said the
deaths of the Jewish writers, poets
and public figures climaxed a four-
year campaign by Soviet
authorities to eradicate Jewish
culture in the USSR.
Between 1948 and 1952 some
431 outstanding Jewish artists
were arrested. They included 217
writers, 108 actors, 87 painters and
sculptors and 19 musicians. Most
of the prisoners died in Soviet
labor camps, Gold said.

QUESTION: Why do many
follow a custom of eating “kugel"
on the Sabbath?
ANSWER: "Kugel” is a name
given to a delicacy which contains
a stuffing of meat or other foods
contained in a crust of dough
which covers it both from above
and beneath. Some claim that the
term “kugel" indicates its circular
appearance and comes from the
Hebrew “k’igul” which means
“like a circle."
It is claimed that the idea of
eating a delicacy contained

Gulf Ruled Guilty
In Job Case
LONDON, (JTA) — A race
relations broard committee has
ruled that the Gulf Oil Company-
Middle East was guilty of unlawful
discrimination withdrawing a job
offer to a British non-Jewish
woman who married a Jew.
Mrs. Lionda Friedburger com
plained to the board that her
employment as private secretary to
Gulf Oil Company vice chairman
E. F.Diebes fell through when the
company learned that she married
a Jew. She was represented at the
committee hearing by veteran
Jewish lawyer Victor Mishcon.
The conciliation committee of
the race relations board is now try
ing to negotiate a settlement com
pensating to Mrs. Friedburger for
the loss of the job. The oil com
pany has hither to claimed that in
employing staff it made no distinc
tions between Jews and non-Jews.
is a means of remembering the
manna which the Hebrews had for
food in the wilderness. That man
na was contained between a
layerof dew underneath it and a
layer of dew above it.
The Sabbath is an appropriate
time to remember this because of
at least two reasons: the Sabbath
itself is a reminder of the exodus
from Egypt; furthermore, on the
eve of the Sabbath two portions of
manna were found at the door
step instead of the usual daily
one so that the extra one would be
available for the Sabbath. Thus the
double portion of the manna was a
signal for the arrival of the Sab
bath.
Protest Visas
For PLO
LONDON (JTA) — Protests
are mounting in Britain following
official confirmation that
representatives of the Palestine
Liberation Organization received
entry visas from a British Embassy
in the Middle East to attend the
Inter-Parliamentary Union con
ference here next month.
The visas were granted despite
protests by Jewish and non-Jewish
personalities and organizations.
The British Embassy issuing the
visas was not identified but it is
presumed that it was the Embassy
in Lebanon.
acknowledged publicly by any of
ficial Soviet source," Gold stated.
Now, 23 years after the massacre,
the anti-Jewish policies are still
perpetuated by the Soviet
government. Jewish culture
remains under a sentence ol death.
The irony of August 12, 1952, he
observed, lies in the fact that in
committing its despicable act of
assassination, “the Soviet govern
ment could not foresee that no act
of murder would ever crush the
Jewish spirit. In fact, that tragedy
made Soviet Jews more deter
mined than ever to dedicate
themselves to their history and
culture. In the face of harsh
government restrictions against
the practice of their culture or
language, Soviet Jews have
persevered over the past 23 years."
On the anniversary of that “in
famous event, it is essential that we
in America rededicate our efforts
to help free Soviet Jews, so that
they can fulfill themselves as Jews
wherever they desire," Gold said.
