forward with faith. From youth
we have grown with the essen
tial Jewish Emunah and un
derstanding; and we must
realize that the present period
is a challenge to be faced and
met, and we shall meet it.
Evaluating the problems and
dangers of the time, our role
must be the traditional Jewish
role of hope and action, not
pessimism and inaction.
Judaism, from its infancy,
has taught belief in a G-d, a
Creator of the Universe,
dynamic in human history. An
infinitesimal, imperceptible
spark of this G-d is implanted
in every human breast. With
this value Judaism has satisfied
the fundamental and universal
need of man to believe in
something. And at this hour of
the titanic human struggle
between opposite contradictory
philosophies Judaism com
mends this belief to the free
world. Today survival itself
depends upon the acceptance of
this Jewish value. We must en
visage faithfully in this condi
tion, and to manifest ourselves
as the possessors of courage,
we must recognize that “our
times are in G-d’s hand,” and,
that we must have confidence
in His benevolent intentions in
our behalf; then we in our day,
or we, through our descen
dants, may behold the
“AHARIT HAYAMIM” of
which the Prophets Hosea and
Micah have spoken, when “The
Best” which is “Yet To Be,” is
sure to be, by virtue of our Lov
ing Father’s clemency and
grace unto us all.
Now, as a prelude of the
New Year services, let us read
the final stanza of the beautiful
poem Ahot Ketanah composed
by Abraham Hazan Gerondi
of the Spanish Golden Era by
which we implore G-d that
the troubles of the old year
may cease and the new year br
ing a harvest of blessings, as
the poet sings:
"Be stmny mid rejoice that your
/siin shall yet /toss,
And ho/w tn your Rock, for His
promise He keeps
March on up to Zion for He shall
proclaim.
'Cast ye up. cast ye up, clear the
hii/husiy to Zion,'
Benin, O year, until the blessing*
iind joys. ’’
May you be inscribed and
sealed in the Book of Life,
good health and prosperity.
