Films Bring History Into
Focus for Bicentennial
By DEBRA SAMUELSON
At least 15 films and filmstrips
concerning slices of world Jewish
history ranging from the American
Revolution to the present era are
projected as suitable for use in
programs celebrating our coun
try's bicentennial next year, the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency has
found in a survey.
Fourteen of these films are listed
by the Friendship Press, a division
of the Interchurch Center, in a
study outline for its source book,
“Religious Freedom in America."
The outline stresses that the films
and other materials it lists are “for
social studies teachers in the
classroom and for discussion
leaders of civic and religious
groups."
The B'nai B'rith Anti-
Defamation League is issuing 11 of
the films listed in the outline.
Seven of them are in a series,
“Jews and their Religion." The
Friendship Press has described
“Who are the A mer ' can Jews?",
"What is Judaism?" and "The Life
Cycle of the Jew" as especially
useful. i _
Other ADL films in the outline
include "The Inheritance," which
examines the American im
migrants and the changes they
made on social and cultural
America, and “Writings of the
Nazi Holocaust," which gives per
sonal accounts of the Nazi
persecution related through fic
tion, poetry and personal journals.
The plight of the Soviet Jews in
the 1970s, entitled "Let My People
Go," is another ADL production
listed in the outline. Friendship
Press suggests that this film
“shows strength of religious
motivations and importance of
religious freedom."
All of the ADL films are ap
proximately 30 minutes in length
and are 16 mm. black and white
with sound.
Not listed in the outline is the
B’nai b’rith’s "Jews in American
History," which bears the same ti
tle as the pamphlet by Oscar
Handlin and a B'nai B'rith
curriculum guide.
The films and Handlin's
pamphlet may be obtained from
the Anti-Defamation League, 316
Lexington Avenue, New York,
NY. 10016.
Two filmstrips are being cir
culated by the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, 838 Fifth
Avenue, New York, N Y. 10021.
“The Jews Settle in New Amster
dam," a 37-frame color filmstrip
with script, describes the Jews who
came to New Amsterdam seeking
religious freedom. The other,
"Martin Buber: The Life in
Dialogue," contains 65 color
frames with sound.
A colonial patriot's struggle for
both religious apd political
freedom is the subject of “The
Rebel," a production about Rabbi
Gershon Seixas. Fhis 28-minute
black and white sound film is
producted by the Biard Corp.,
1564 Broadway, New York, N Y
10036.
The violence of the Na/i concen-
tralion camps is described in
“Night and Fog," a 16 mm sound
film from Mass Media Ministries,
JITf) ' North Charles Street,
Baltimore, Md 21218. This film,
running 31 minutes, depicts the
camps in 1940 interspersed with
scenes of the camps today.
