Volunteers Aid "Meals On Wheels"
PACKED and ready for delivery is the hot meal for a shut-in,
held by David Schwarzman, volunteer. At left is Rose Silver,
secretary at JFCB. Flanking Mr. Schwarzman are volunteers
Sol Kaufman (1) and Shea Diamond.
The Atlanta community’s new
“Kosher Meals on Wheels”
program, which provides home-
delivered lunches to persons un
able to prepare their own meals,
provides also a mitzva for the
volunteers who handle the
delivery.
“This program provides a
perfect example of the vital role
played by volunteers in our com
munity agency programs," said
David Goldwasser, social service
department 'chairman of the
Jewish Family and Children’s
Bureau.
In mid-January, when the
meals on wheels program began,
seven men and women
volunteered to take turns pick
ing up and delivering the noon
meal. They were recruited by thfe
Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary
and the Retired Senior
Volunteer Program of the
Jewish Community Center.
One volunteer, reflecting upon
30 years of community service,
said “Never have I experienced
the self-gratificatioh that I
received from this program.”
Another describes the two-
way experience, saying, ‘The
recipient of the hot lunch looks
forward to seeing me, so profuse
in thanks and gratitude, and I, in
turn, eagerly wait for my
delivery days and good feeling I
receive."
A back-up system is built into
the program so no one will be
disappointed at meal time.
