Old Cowboy* Never Die They Jutt Hide Away
Ole Timer Reflects About Wagon Trains
As Vehicles Ready For Valley Forge Trip
by DAVID BORENSTEIN
On a recent trip to the West I
had the occasion to visit the
Retirement Corral of the
Benevolent and Fraternal Order
of Hebrew Cowboys located in
Yeshiva Gulch, Wyoming. It was
at the corral that I discovered
the memoirs of Shlomo
Saddlesky.
Mr. Saddlesky, or "Wild
Shlom” as he preferred to be
called, claimed to be the first
Jewish cowboy to cross the
North American continent as a
Wagon Master for a Wagon
Train.
“I remember that first trip
like it was yesterday,” he wrote.
“Why we had so much trouble
getting a “shochet” and imagine
me having to find one who knew
about buffaloes, oy vey. And if
that wasn’t enough we had, as a
precaution, to find a mohel as
one of the travellers was with
child.”
“The wagon train proceeded
smoothly until we reached the
land of the Apache’s. Then

tragedy struck. The "shochet”
fell ill. We were in a quandry.
What to do? But luckily, like
manna from heaven, came a
solution. We found among our
ranks a man from Peking. So
instead of Buffalo Brisket we
finished the journey on a strict
diet of Moo Goo Gai Pan.”
As I left Yeshiva Gulch I was
filled with wonderment and a
sense of awe at the accomplish
ments of Wild Shlom and his
Kosher wagon train. Why in
our day and time we don’t even
know what a wagon looks like
much less what one feels like.
This pained me as I am sure it
would have pained the gang at
the Corral. However, the
Bicentennial has come galloping
to the rescue.
On April 10 at Stone Mountain
Park the glorious days of
Shlomo Saddlesky and his band
of settlers will be recreated as
part of the Bicentennial Celebra
tion. A wagon train pilgrimage
will gather at Stone Mountain to
begin its journey to Valley
Forge, Pa. The pilgrimage, a re
enactment of the Westward
movement, goes east this time.
Every state will send authentic
wagons to what is expected to be
the nation’s largest Bicentennial—§
