WHITE HOUSE, Waahington - To
have and to hold hia lease on this ex
clusive national capital address at
least for the next four years, Can
didate Gerald Ford last Thursday
reiterated his friendship and support
for the State of Israel.
He was speaking before an exclusive
press conference arranged for
newspapers of the American Jevfish
Press Association and staff members
of several unaffiliated Jewish press
services. These included the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency and the World
Union Press.
Against the setting of the exquisite
and historic Blue Room of the lovely
home of United States Presidents, the
Republican standard bearer faced a
corps of about fifty Jewish newsmen,
answering questions and shaking
hands with as many as could crowd
around him as he departed for other
commitments.
He was introduced by Max Fisher,
Detroit, probably the number one
backer of Ford’s campaign in the
Jewish community and chairman of
the People for Ford Campaign. Mr.
Fisher called attention to the
historical nature of the conference.
“As far as I can tell,” he said, “this is
the first time such a conference has
been arranged."
The occasion was certainly the first
held on the eve of a national election,
but it was not the first time Jewish
newsmen were hosted at the White
House.
Early during the 35-year-old ex
istence of the American Jewish Press
Association, Jewish editors came to
the White House to meet with Presi
dent Truman.'*
Later during the Eisenhower ad
ministration, an invitation was issued
the newsmen. However after they
assembled, Eisenhower begged off
since he was engaged minute-by-
minute with a developing Middle East
crisis. His associate Sherman Adams
was the substitute.
President Johnson, in 1966, received
members of AJPA in the Cabinet
Room and for nearly an hour briefed
them on the situation in the Middle
East.
Last week was in a way "ethnic
week” for Ford and he met with
minority groups in several cities, in
cluding New York City.
In his introductory remarks, Ford

Brown: Israel ‘A Burden’
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Gen. George Brown, the Chairman of the
Joint Chiefs of Staff, who stirred controversy several months ago
when he told a college audience that Jews controlled America’s bank
ing system and its most influential newspapers, has told a reporter
that Israel is “more of a burden than an asset," according to Time
magazine in its latest issue.
Time said that Brown made the remark in the course of an inter
view with Raanan Lurie, a cartonist-writer for King Features Syn
dicate. A full report on the interview will be published by King
Features Syndicate next week, but the gist of Brown’s remarks have
been leaked to Israeli newspapers, Time said.
According to Time, Brown’s statement has already causeda furore
in Israel and will cause “some embarrassment” to President Ford.
The General’s earlier remarks at Duke University brought a rebuke
from Ford but the President declined to dismiss him despite urgings
from Jewish organizations.

PARIS, (JTA) - Death
threats from an extreme right-
wing group in Spain have been
received by several members of
Madrid’s Jewish community, ac
cording to reports reaching here.
A Jewish spokesman for that
city’s 3000 Jews declined to
name the recipients or the
number. According to the
Madrid newspaper, El Pais, at
least four Jews, and several non-
Jews received threats from the
organization calling itself “The
Adolf Hitler Sixth Commando of
the New Order.”
These included editors of El
Pais; the newspaper, Diario de
Barcelona; and the magazine,
Possible which last week
published a lengthy article on

Academy of the Spanish

CARDIFF, Wales (JTA) - If
Middle East diplomacy resumes
next year, Britain will try to
make certain that Israel will not
be “deserted" in its bid for peace
and security. Prime Minister
James Callaghan made this
pledge here recently at a
dinner in his own Welsh con
stituency given by the South
... in brief
Glamorgan Labor Friends of
Israel in honor of Israeli Am
bassador Gideon Rafael.
Callaghan said he hoped that
whoever was the Secretary of
State after the U. S. Presidential
election would have the “same
depth of understanding as Dr.
Henry Kissinger.” The dinner,
attended largely by local Labor
Party officials, was a
demonstration not only of
Socialist links but of the sym
pathy of the Welsh people for
Israel. Most of the speakers
stressed the affinities between
the two nations.
JERUSALEM, (JTA) - A
Jerusalem magistrate slapped
heavy penalties on an Arab from
Jordan and his West Bank lady
friend who were found having
sexual intercourse in the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old
City.
Habas Mohammed Abdul
Halim, 33, a visitor from Jordan,
and Louisa Margaridi, 36, a
Brazilian national living in
Ramallah, were each sentenced
to six months in jail and fined IL
5000.
The sentences were tougher
than asked for by the prosecu
tion. The magistrate explained
the couple’s actions were deeply
offensive to religious sen
sibilities and could result in
religious friction if not severely
punished.

for Israel this week to join over
4000 other American Jewish
leaders for “This Year In
Jerusalem,” United Jewish
Appeal’s national conference
taking place Oct. 24-31.
The conference is designed to
express American solidarity
with the people of Israel, giving
added meaning to this year’s
campaign slogan “We are One.”
Atlanta delegates in two
groups left on Wednesday and
Thursday. Nineteen young
leaders from Atlanta met a con
tingency of over 400 counter
parts from throughout the
United States. This "Young
Leadership" section stopped in
Vienna, spending several hours
at Mauthausen, a former Nazi
concentration camp. In Israel,
they will cover the country from
Eilat to the Golan Heights.
The 17 members of the Atlan

headquarter in Haifa, Tel Aviv,
and Jerusalem, touring the

Flu Shots
Underway At
Jewish Home
Administration of the
swine-flu vaccine (called
“flanken flu” by Director
George Landsman) has been
underway this week to
residents, staff and
volunteers at the Jewish
Home.
Assurances from the
Atlanta-based Center for
Disease Control have testified
to the vaccine’s safety,
Landsman said, and only a
few incidents of resistance
have been noted from adult
children of residents.
Over 300 injections will
have been administered when
the undertaking is completed.
Vaccine is furnished free of

AJWF Protests Brown
With Wire To President
The following is the text of a mailgram sent this week to
President Ford by Sidney Feldman, President of the Atlan
ta Jewish Welfare Federation.
“General Brown's intemperate anti-Israel and anti-
British remarks indicate that he has again acted irrespon
sibly. This is indicative of a massive lack of sensitivity and
respect for our staunchest allies in the Middle East and
Europe.
"We strongly urge that appropriate measures be taken by
, you against General Brown and informing the American
people as well as our allies of your repudiation of General
Brown's harmful remarks.”
