His conclusion was that
Emory now possesses a
research collection in several
areas ef Judaic Studies and
that, given the coatintiad sup
port of the University and the
Jewish community, ‘‘it is en
tirely reasonable to hope that
it will attain the same high
level as Emory's general
theology collection, l.e., the
leading collection In Ha field in

Furnishings
Needed For
Soviet Jews
With a new family of Soviet
Jewish immigrants expected to
arrive in Atlanta every othn*
month, home furnishings are
badly needed to help provide liv
ing quarters for them.
In the past two years, the
Atlanta community has helped
set up apartments to accom
modate 64 Russian immigrants.
Since May of this year, eight
such apartments have been fur
nished through volunteer efforts
of members of the National
Council of Jewish Women, and
through contributions from the
community. ■
At this time, the supply of
home furnishings is at an aU-
timeiow, and the volunteers are
appealing to the public to check
for any useable items. Anne
Birnbaum, 394-5794, or Nancy
Pollard, 255-3670, can give more
information.
Atlanta Jewish Welfare Federa
tion voted to atloeste $11,000,
spread over a two-year period, aa
matching funds to enable Emory
to develop its Judaica collection.
The grant has already been
matched by the office of the
Dean of the College, and an
Emory Judaica Library Fund is
being established to promote
continued support. Professor
David It. Blumenthal, the Jay
and Leslie Cohen Professor of
Judaic Studies, at Emory said,
“Ths visit of Dr. Berlin was very
productive. W» mow know what s
we have and what ws still heed;
and the matching grants from
the Federation and the Dean
give us a very good start toward
an outstanding scholarly a > J un
dergraduate Judaica collection.”
Professor Blumenthal also noted
that the collection includes some
rather rare hooka, among them a
print of the Zohar (the central
work of Jewish mysticism) from
Cremona, Italy (dated 1559 C.E.)
and was donated by him to
Howe of tiie Jesuits in Paris in ,
1692.
An early Hebrew dictionary, a 1
rare early print of selections!
from Maimonides’ Arabic <
writings, and a Latin translation !
of the Commentary of Raahi are |
also part of the coHeetien.
“We hope to mount a Judaica ;
exhibit in the near future^”
Blumenthal said.
