jj First Israel furniture week sparked by Llbows

Furniture manufacturers in
Israel have begun to prepare
their displays for the “First
Israel Furniture Week.” This in
ternational event, scheduled for
May 18-20 in Jerusalem, is ex
pected to attract several hun
dred manufacturers, importers
and furniture distributors
throughout the world.
The idea for the furniture
week was initiated and
promoted by Martin Libowsky,
formerly of Atlanta, now living
in Birmingham, Ala. Active in
the furniture industry,
Libowsky came up with the idea
to help promote business in

Mr. Libowsky is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Irving Libowsky of
Atlanta. Levi Elad of the Israel
Economic Council in Atlanta, is
co-ordinating the event to “try to
bring investors and businessmen
to Israel,” he said.
According to Elad, 250-300
United States furniture dis
tributors, buyers and manufac
turers are expected to attend.
Recent surveys show about
1800 separate enterprises in
Israel produce furniture. Most of
these are small to tiny; many are
one-man operations, having
been passed from father to son.
During the last decade,
however, the industry has grown
with the establishment of larger
ventures, at least ten of which

Dear Friends,
I have just returned from my
eighth trip to Israel and what a
delightful experience it always
is. My first visit there was in
1949 right after Israel’s incep
tion, a time of Tzena’ and shor
tages. But the saying was
always ‘Yeeye Tov - everything
will be all right.’ Over the years,
I’ve watched the country develop
just like a parent watches a
daughter grow up into
womenhood, marry a (Yiddishe)
doctor, and stay married. That’s
‘Nachus’.
Driving through Israel you see
a people full of vim and vitality.
Jerusalem has absorbed 130,000
people in the last ten years. You
can see beautifully landscaped
‘Shikunim’ housing immigrants
from Russia and all qver the
world. Think what a wonderful
feeling it is knowing that your
Bond dollars had a hand in ac
complishing it. The Technion in
Haifa, one of the most outstand
ing schools in the world, from
which so much knowledge stems,
is supplemented by Bonds. In
Hadera, a $500,000,000 power
plant is under construction that
will be powered by coal instead
of oil in addition to other
worthwhile projects financed by
Bond money. When you actually
see all this, that’s ‘Nachus’.
On March 20th,* my good
friend Dave Schulman will be
deservedly honored at an Israel
Bond Dinner. I urge you all to at
tend this meaningful dinner and
buy security, buy yield, buy
Israel Bonds.
