African ties and Israel
Most of the African states
thal severed diplomatic
relations with Israel at the onset
of the last Arab-Israeli war are
reconsidering their action. On
the mistaken' assumption that
their best national interests
would be served, the Africans
dropped their relations with Tel
Aviv so as to show their identity
with the Arab cause.
The move was spurred by an
ill-conceived notion that Arab
wealth and Arab °H would flow
into friendly Africa in generous
dosage. That didn’t happen.
Zaire's President Mobutu Seko
confirmed the rumored report
that the African states that
threw their lot into the Arab

Since breaking with Israel,
Mobutu complained, the
Africans have received only
“moral, aid and higher oil prices
from the Arabs. Zaire’s oil bill
last year rose to $100 million.”
Mobutu said that he would “not
be surprised” if certain African
nations resume diplomatic
relations with Israel. Kenya has *
already asked Jerusalem for
military advisers and tanks.
Israel had been kind to Africa
as a whole. Through special tui
tion arrangements, many
African students were able to
study in Israeli universities and
technical schools. Jews were
everywhere in Black Africa
teaching the natives the latest
scientific method in agriculture,
in dentistry, in general preven
tive medicine and even in
navigation. Th* move by some
African states to drop
diplomatic relations with Israel
