to evangelical missionary efforts
are those between 16 and 22
years of age who have
emotional, home or parental
problems and may be into the
drug culture, according to an
Anti-Defamation League of
B’nai B’rith survey. The findings
reveal,however, that attempts to
convert young Jews by
evangelical and religious cults
have largely failed.
The ADL survey, based on
responses from some 200 rabbis
from 136 cities in 32 states, in
cludes recommendations on
countering missionary attempts.
According to Nat Kameny,
chairman of the League’s
national program committee,
most of the rabbis reported that
few of those influenced “came
from stable homes, where one or
both parents were active in some
aspect of Jewish communal life.”
Many of the rabbis made
creative suggestions as to the
role Jewish groups can play in
countering conversion attempts
among Jewish youth. These in
cluded:
Establishing youth and infor
mation centers and coffee
houses, workshops and
programs on Jewish education
and self-identification, Jewish
hostels for troubled youth,
advertisements with Jewish
answers to evangelical
promotions, development of
materials with emphasis on the
mystical aspects of Judaism, ex
posing attempts at conversion,
strengthening Jewish youth
movements and training adults
to counteract evangelicals.
Many of the rabbis suggested
meaningful dialogue with
Protestant clergy to “make clear
that conversion attempts among

ADL plans to increase its ef
forts to provide background in
formation on evangelical
movements and export those
which are anti-Semitic.
Another area for “urgent
attention,” according to ADL, is
the Jewish family and home. He
said that “until we are prepared
to confront the disintegration of
the Jewish family and home.
Our kids will be fair game for
the cults.”
On the basis of the survey
results. Theodore Freedman,
director of ADL’s program divi
sion, said, “Christian
evangelicals currently constitute
no threat to Jewish survival.
What is a threat to Jews, and
non-Jews, are the demands of
living in a technoscientific socie

on the cultivation of the minds,

General criticizes
Dayan's position
JERUSALEM (ZINS) -
General Israel Tal, who is con
sidered the foremost specialist
in military tactics in the Jewish
State, has sharply criticised
Moshe Dayan, the former
minister of defense because he
has been publicising his opinion
that there is no reason why
Israel should continue the arms
race with thfe Arab states. The
purchase of ever more conven
tional weapons would not lead
Israel to her goal. It would serve
Israel far better if she concen
trated on her atomic option.
Tal categorically rejects this
position. He declared that Israel
has the upper hand as far as con
ventional arms are concerned.
He is convinced that if a new
war should break out, and if
Israel will not commit any major
mistake, she would win a light
ning war against her enemies.
He stated that there is no com
plicated weapon that Israel is
not aware of. Tal added that
Israel’s army is blessed with a
number of valiant men, but he
only mentioned the name of one
of them. “I can cite one man by
name as an example. He is
General Rafael Eytan. In my
opinion he is totally without
fear. He is the greatest among J
the Jewish fighters of our time.”
