Do thoy work?
By Ruth Sellgman
YetU and Yermiyahu made
an unbelievably striking couple
standing under their “chupa”.
She is fair with large blue eyes
and hair so light that it is almost
flaxen white. He is very dark
with jet black hair and sparkling
dark brown eyes.
Standing in the hall, waiting
for the marriage ceremony to
begin, ft was easy to determine
who were from the bride’s side
snd who belonged to the
groom’s. Yetta’s parents are of
solid Dutch stock who fled the
Gestapo and settled in the
United States whre they did
well, re-immigrating to Israel
when Yetta was twelve.
Yermiyahu’s family are rete-
1
tively unschooled Yemenites
who came to Israel in 1948 on
“Magic ICarpet” wings.
Both laymen and
professionals are intrigued by
the many so-called “mixed
marriages” in Israel. Do they
work?
Yetta comes from a world
where women are accepted
members of the commun
ity with minds and careers
of their own. In Yermiyahu’s cir
cle, the patriarchal strands are
still strong; the head of the fam
ily not only makes all decisions,
but even does most of the shop
ping, expecting the woman to find
sole fulfillment in domestic tasks,
in serving him and the family.

Lord, 1st not the line at the supermarket be too long.
Let the produce be fresh and crisp, and let there be
Just one mors jar of Kosher-for-Paasover mayonnaise left
You see, I forgot
That there is school next week. And tuna fish falls off
matsa sandwiches so easily
When it is not held together with enough mayonnaise. v
God, please let everyone be well for the two
Seder nights. And while you’re at it, could you please make it
The rest of the year too? And if you do not make me spend
So many hours swabbing chicken pox with calamine lotion,
I promise that I will
Devote the leisure to ecology and UJA and things like that.
Almighty Father, let the children behave at the seder table,
For I have labored so long to make everything right and lovely.
Suffer not their little fingers to spill wine on the table
cloth and carpeting:
It never seems to come out.
And let them pipe the Mah Nishtanah and the Chad Gadya
In such abundant glee and wisdom
As to make the car pool to Hebrew School worth it.
King of the Universe, it seems
That I will never get all those dishes changed
And everyone’s clothes ready, and all the chametz
Out of the house in time. So remember, Dear Lord,
To please make sure the cleaning woman shows up.
Master of the World: Let each year
Our table be fuller
Not only with Your bounty, but with people —
All our loved ones, dear friends, new babies
And young lovers shyly brought home
For approval. And let this year begin,
And next year see, our banquet seats overflowing
With our long-lost brothers who crouch in fear behind the
Iron Curtain.
God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; Let me not,
In the hustle and rush of preparation, forget what
The Passover really means. j«h*c—

Yetta’s family live in
prestigious North Tel Aviv, in a
high-rise apartment building in
which all of the tenants are of
Ashkenasi origin.
Yermiyahu grew up in a two-
room wooden hut where he and
nine other siblings fought for
space and attention.
Yetta and Yermiyahu and
their three children now live in
an apartment building largely
populated by young couples.
Yermy is a product of his up
bringing. It has taken him time
to accept the fact that his wife is
an equal partner in their
marriage, that her desire to
work full-time until their third
child was born, was both an
emotional, as well as a financial
necessity. Yet, because they met
in the Army where she was
already an officer, with a rank
equal to his, it was not difficult
for him to accept her life-style,
albeit one quite different from
that of his mother’s.
Unfortunately,. not all such
“mixed marriages” succeed. In
fact, a leading sociologist recent
ly predicted that one out of every
three marriages being per
formed in Israel today may end
in divorce.
