The first trees of Atlanta’s Ur
ban Memorial Forest were
planted last week with city,
state and Jewish National Fund
officials turning the earth
around a symbolic Flowering
Crabapple in pink bud.
Site of the planned forest is at
the heavily travelled expressway
hub of 1-75, 1-85 and 1-20 near
the State Capitol, where it will
not only beautify the southern
approach to the city but cut
down on noise and pollution as
well.
Cooperating agencies are the
Atlanta Bureau of Parks and
Recreation, the Georgia Depart
ment of Transportation, and the
Georgia Forestry Commission.
Conceived by the Jewish
National Fund through Caotor
Isaac Goodfriend, Director of
the Bureau of Parks Theodore
Mastroianni, and Stuart
Eizenstat, the Forest will have
its counterpart in Israel.
For each tree planted in
Atlanta, another will be planted
in the American Bicentennial
Park in Israel, continuing the 70
year work of JNF in afforesta
tion and land reclamation.
In his dedicatory address
Wednesday, Mayor Maynard
Jackson (dpbbed with the
Hebrew name “Meier” by JNF
Executive Dr. Samuel Cohen)
said, “As excited as we are about
the technical benefits, we are
very much enraptured by the
sympolism involved ... in the
memorial to a great and struggl
ing people.”
Meyer Pesin, national presi
dent of the Jewish National
Fund was in Atlanta for the
dedication. He recounted the
history of JNF from the early
days of the “pushkes” to varied
programs carried out in the
Jewish State today.

A tree grows in Atlanta! Officials tamp the earth at dedication
of Urban Memorial Forest.
called the planting of trees “a
bridge which will bind the
citizens of Atlanta with the
Citizens of Israel.”
A plaque was presented to
Mayor Jackson by Dr. Cohen
designating a grove of trees had
been planted in honor of his
birthday, which occurred the
day of the dedication, “and his
devoted service to human
rights.”
Among the species of trees
which have been carefully
selected for inclusion in the Ur
ban Memorial Forest are
dogwood, willow oak, southern
magnolia, sugar maple,
sweetgum and Japanese
Zelkova.
Other participants in the
dedication included Mr.
Mastroianni, Hope T. Moore,
Commissioner of the Depart
ment of Parks, Libraries and
Cultural Affairs; a representative
of Governor George Bus bee,
and members of the City Council
and the Georgia General As
sembly and JNF officers and sup

Atlanta JNF officers are Ben
Golden, president; Cantor Good-
friend, Dr. Walter Wildstein and
Sol Singer, vice presidents; J.

tarian; Harry Katz, secretary;
and Harold Marcus, treasurer.
Donations to plant trees in
Atlanta can be made through

same number of trees will be
added to the American Bicenten
