Jewish all-American basketball team
by Haskell Cohen
This is the time of year when
the AP, UPI and sundry other
syndicates release their All-
American basketball teams. In
compliance with this practice
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
presents its annual AU-Jewish
All-American. In all likelihood
the bulk of the players selected
by JTA experts will comprise the
spearhead of the United States
Maccabiah team in the forth
coming international games to
be held in Israel July 12-22.
Prom a national viewpoint
two of the players are very out-
Gold Medal. He is far and away
the most outstanding Jewish
player in the country today.
The second All-American who
has been given quite a look-see
by the professional scouts is Joel
Kramer of San Diego State.
Kramer is a big, powerful boy
who has been on an NCAA con
tender the past few years. Larry
Friend, former New York
Knickerbocker performer and
currently one of the owners of
the Phoenix Suns of the NBA,
advises, “When I watched Joel
play last year as a sophomore I
thought that he definitely was a

to play against some of the
better performers his size.
Consequently, he has sharpened
up his game both on offense and
defense and has helped make
American University into one of
the better teams in the D.C.
Jonathan Levine is known as
the pogo stick around the Boston
area. Although he plays for a
rather small college,' Salem
State, he is one of the top
rebounders in the country, out-
jumping boys four to five inches
taller than he. He is good for an
average of 15 rebounds per
game. In addition to playing on
the basketball team at Salem
State, he has proved to be quite
proficient in track. The first
time Levina threw the javelin he
tossed the stick in the
neighborhood of 200 feet, no

would qualify him for-{the

concerned.
Grunfeld is a fine, upstanding
young man who came to this
country from Rumania at the
age of 12 and has developed into
an all-around court performer.
He was a member of the United
States Olympic team which won
the Gold Medal in Montreal, and
to show his adaptability and ver
satility he converted at the re
quest of coach Dean Smith of the
United States Olympic five,
from the forecourt to the back
court position. Smith found
himself with a plethora of up
front shooters but needed ad
ditional help in the back court to
help keep the ball moving, and
Grunfeld was selected as the
sacrificial lamb. He adapted to
back court play, sacrificing all
his scoring, but aided and

these aren t the little dinky kind
