United Synagogue issues
'reunified Jerusalem* stamp
A four-section stamp depic
ting the reunification of
Jerusalem is being made
available by the United
Synagogue of America to mark
the tenth anniversary of the un
ited city.
Artist Paul Freeman was
commissioned to design the
stamp, which depicts the old and
new sectors of Jerusalem. The
words of the Psalmist, 122:3
"Jerusalem now rebuilt, a city
united and unbroken,” appear in
Hebrew and English. The stamp
is in white with blue
Promises, Promises
background, with the encircling
gold wall representing "the hope
of peace embracing Jerusalem
the Golden.”
Arthur J. Levine, president of
United Synagogue, said that the
stamps, through their use on the
backs of letters, will “afford
(users) the opportunity of giving
public expression to our commit
ment to the idea of Jerusalem
forever united in Jewish hands,
and secondly, will help us
strengthen and expand the
United Synagogue’s Israel
program.
Poland neglects Jews
by Joseph Polakoff
A protest by a Jewish
professor at Howard Univer
sity to Polish officials that their
government is fhiling to show
the contributions made by Jews
to Poland and their martyrdom
during the Nazi occupation has
resulted in a pledge that at least
part of the neglect will be rec
tified.
"Finally the Poles are doing
something,” said Dr. David
Korn, chairman of the German-
Russian Department at the
predominantly Black university.'
He said he received a letter
from the director of the
Auschwitz Museum, Kazimierz
Smolen, which disclosed that a
“complete change” is to be made
at the museum of the Nazi con
centration camp at Auschwitz-
Birkinau, where about three
million Jews were gassed, hang
ed or shot. The exhibit, about
which Korn had protested, is to
be closed and a new exposition is
to be installed.
“We are grateful to you for
your request to change the ex
hibit,” Smolen wrote Korn in
reporting the decision. It was
made at a meeting on February
3 to plan the exposition titled
“Martyrology and Struggle of
Jews.” Korn made available to
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
the texts of Smolen’s letter and
his written protest to Kazimierz
Kakol, Minister of External Af
fairs in the Polish Ministry of
Religion 18 months ago. Korn
said that because of “pressure by
Jews outside of Poland, the
Polish government has finally
agreed to rebuild Barrack 17 of
the Auschwitz-Birkinau camp to
be known as ‘Martyrology and
Struggle of Jews,’ ” and it will be
“open to the public.”
On a visit to Poland, Korn
said, he warfUhocked to see that
not only synagogues, cemeteries
and museums depicting Jewish
life are not being maintained but
that the few remaining ones are
disappearing and that in
Auschwitz the museum “depic
ting the massacre of Jews shows
everything but the Jews."
In his letter to Kakol on
September 1, Korn said: “I have
just returned from my trip and
rush to inform you that despite
all the assurances you and your
associates have given me I can
not believe you." Korn wrote
that in Aupchwitz the Jewish
barrack is “closed for
remodelling” but only after
Korn threatened to enlist the
support of American Am
bassador Richard Davies in
Warsaw was he allowed to enter
“an empty barrack with several
pictures of Himmler and Hitler
as well as pictures of B. Brecht,
E. M. Memarque and others with
captions stating that they
perished during the war.”
