M INI A A Ml IlillHilUI/illilliJ frown on <yv. and Las Vegas SO LO FOODS . by Ben QaHob The um by synagogues of such gambling methods ss Las Vegas Nights and bingo to raise funds to help meet their budgets is strongly opposed by the central organizations of Reform, Conservative and Orthodox con gregations and does not appear to be a significant problem for any category of synagogues. That conclusion emerged from a telephone survey by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency of the viewB of officials of the (Reform) Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the (Conser vative) United Synagogue of America, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and the (Orthodox) Young Israel organization. The survey was made after an official of the Rabbinical Council of America, an association of Orthodox rabbis, declared that leaders of the mgjor American faiths should band together “to combat the proliferation of Las Vegas Nights and other forms of blatant gambling in synagogues, churches and religious in stitutions” which he said “under mine the religious character of these institutions.” The New York Federation of Reform Synagogues called such fund-, raising “self-condemned” and urged member congregations to reject it. An official said the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the association of Reform rab bis, declared in 1949 that such gambling was “contrary to our faith and tradition.” In 1976, he ^aid^me^)f^he UAHCjs^ This Is a “no-no.” nine regional directors made a survey of the problem with 29 UAHC congregations respond ing. Of these 23 did not per mit gambling and four did. On a question on whether the syna gogue leadership was consider ing use of such fund raising, 12 said no and six said yes. On the specific issue of use of Las Vegas Nights, the official reported, UAHC regional direc tors for the Northeast-Lakes region and the South Pacific region, expressed concern recently over information that some Reform congregations were using Las Vegas Nights and bingo. Since approval at the New York referendum, he said, two or three Reform con gregations in the metropolitan area were understood to have started Las' Vegas Night fund raising. He added that Reform rabbis are speaking out strongly against such fund-raising and that the ITAHC did not expect it to spread significantly. He es timated that 10 to 15 percent of UAHC congregations used bingo regularly and that those con gregations were mostly likely to use Las Vegas Nights. The UAHC doss not have authority to punish congregations which use gambling to raise funds. Rabbi Benjamin Kreitman, executive director of the United Synagogues and a former member of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly, the association of Conservative rab bis, said that in the past the United Synagogue had expelled member congregations for violating its ban on gambling, specifically for bingo. He said that on one occasion, there had been a crackdown resulting in the expulsion of 30 member con gregations. Earl Raab, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council in San Fran cisco, said the committee is a direct answer to the opening of a Nazi bookstore across from a synagogue in a residential dis trict at the southwest edge of San Francisco. He said up to now the efforts to provide educa tion about Nazism had been mainly an effort of the Jewish community. Raab said the bookstore was boarded up April 5 following the damage inflicted April 1 when a group of more than 50 angry JewB wrecked the store. The owner of the building, Nathan Green, an Auschwitz survivor who rented the store not know ing it was to Nazis, is in the process of having the group evicted. They have until April 15 to vacate the place. Following the wrecking of the Rudolf Hess Bookstore, rocks were thrown at Temple B’nai Emunah across the street, smashing five stained-glass win- dows. Two persons were arrested in connection with the wrecking of the bookstore, Morris Weiss, a 55-year-old Auschwitz survivor and his son, Allen, 24, and charged with malicious mischief and assault. Rabbi Brian Lurie, executive director of the Jewish Welfare Fund of San Francisco, said the Jewish community felt it was “grotesque” that the Nazis would have opened a store with a swastika en the window in front of a synagogue which includes in its congregation many members who had come through the horrors of the Holocaust. Raab said that the Nazis in San Francisco have only 10-20 members and usually have to bring members from outside when they plan a major .(fcwpnatratiqn, ,
