Maze I Tov!
After 2000 years,
Israel was reborn!
by Jack Geldbart
It was a Friday afternoon on
the 5th day of Iyar 5708 (1948)
that David Ben Gurion read the
Proclamation of Independence to
240 brave Jews at the Museum of
Tel Aviv. And so, 29 years ago,
the Promised Land was redeem
ed and became a beacon for Jews
everywhere.
The proclamation recognized
that more than a country was
being born, for no people have
been scattered as are the Jews. It
was a resting place and Ben
Gurion read the message which
still sounds a clarion call today:
“We appeal to the Jewish people
throughout the Diaspora to ral
ly round the Jews of Eretz-Israel
in the tasks of immigration and
upbuilding and to stand by them
in the great struggle for the
realization of the age-old dream
— the redemption of Israel.”
Only 37 other Jews signed the

What does Israel mean to us

Rabins have tzouris: Leah
fined, Yitzhak takes leave
by David Landau
TEL AVIV, (JTA) - Mrs.
Leah Rabin was fined IL 250,000
($27,200) by a Tel Aviv District
Court Sunday for the bank ac
count she and her husband,
Premier Yitzhak Rabin, had
kept in Washington, D. C. in
violation of Israel’s currency
laws. She was given the option of
paying the fine or serving one
year in jail.
Rabin presided at his last
Cabinet meeting Sunday before
taking a leave of absence and
naming Defense Minister
Shimon Peres to serve as Acting
Premier in his stead. The
Premier will officially start his
vacation Friday, after Israel’s
Independence Day celebrations.
He is expected to remain at his
Tel Aviv home and will be brief
ed on affairs of state.
Judge Dov Levin, who heard
Mrs. Rabin plead guilty to the
charges, rejected a plea for
leniency from defense attorney
Moshe Alexandroni. However,
he took into consideration the
fact that Rabin was forced to re
sign as leader of the Ijabor Party.
He said for that reason he was not
imposing the maximum penalty
allowed by the law which is a
