Young indicts U.N. for failure to
deal with world inhumanity
by Vida Goldgar
Andrew Young, the United
States Ambassador to the
United Nations, criticized the
world organization Sunday in an
address to 800 persons attending
Holocaust memorial ceremonies
at Greenwood Cemetery in
Atlanta.
Noting that althougii the
United Nations was structured
in response to racism, persecu
tion, and violations of human
rights, Young said, “It remains
an impotent vehicle for dealing
with these problems. Rather
than see them as crimes against
all humanity, we try to make
them political problems ... the
internal problems of one nation
or the other.”
Standing in front of the
tombstone-monument to the six
million Nazi victims, and wear
ing a black velvet yarmulke,
Young summed up with these
words: “When we cease to be in
volved, slowly but surely we see
the progress of mankind
gradually eroded, slipping back
into the kind of Hitlerian men
tality that brought a Holocaust
in our lifetime.
“Let us on this occasion make
sure that there will be no more
holocausts anywhere for any
people.”
The annual memorial obser
vance is co-sponsored by the
Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation’s Holocaust Com
mittee and Hemshech, Organiza
tion of Survivors.
Six survivors of six different
concentration camps lighted the
six towering torches, one for
each million Jews who died.

Who are we?
by Michelle Weiner
The Nazis had an idea who we were. We were sub
humans; we were scum. We were to be destroyed, wiped
from the face of the earth. They tried.
What is a Jew? The Nazis thought they knew how to
define a Jew. A Jew had a Jewish grandparent — period.
Is it not strange that the master killers of our race had a
defined picture of us when we ourselves don’t, but, on the
other hand, perhaps if we had known our identities there
would have been no holocaust.
Who are we? Yes, we are Jews, but who are Jews? People
who eat bagels and lox every Sunday morning, people who
hang mezzuzot around their necks? Or, shall we be like the
Nazis and merely respond, “one with a Jewish parent. ’’ If
this is the answer, then we are truly helping our enemies in
their attempt to destroy us.
For a Jew must identify himself with Judaism. We must
follow the customs and traditions handed down from
generation to generation. We must endeavor to acquaint
ourselves with our past. For our past holds the key to our
future. Only by remembering the martyrs of the recent past
(of which the victims of the Holocaust are joined by
thousands of others) can we learn how to prevent such
catastrophes in the future. We must support the State of
Israel, so that the oppressed Jews of all time will have a
homeland to run to, unlike the unfortunate victims of the
Holocaust. Finally, we must teach our children and give
them the sense of identification that will insure the ex
istence of our people forever. We then will truly defy our
enemies.
We must do this, for only we can insure our survival as a
people. The Holocaust taught us a painful lesson: We can
not depend on other nations. We, like our murderers, must
know who we are and fight for the right to be.
