Ttd Turner apology not accoptablo
Editor:
I want to commend you on
your editorial position on the
Ted Turner matter. Having just
completed the observance of
Passover and Yom Hashoar, we
simply cannot take lightly anti-
Semitism in whatever form.
Instead of apologizing for Ted
Turner, as some have done, we
should ask the Commissioner of
Baseball (who appears to have
some familiarity with Mr.
Turner’s rhetoric) if such a per
son should have a baseball
franchise, or inquire with the
FCC if these are the types of
people who should be broad
cast licensees.
Sure, he was concerned with
ticket sales, so he turned to the
ADL who quickly accepted his
apology.
His Jewish employees, in their
letter to the Editor, feel that the
matter is closed. “His apology
has been accepted by Stu
Lewengrub of the -ADL” they
write. I don’t believe that his
apology has been or can be
accepted that easily by those of
us who watched latent anti-
Semitism, careless remarks and
insults turn into a Holocaust.
Have we considered the
feelings of Jerry Kapstein who
was the object of the insult?
I hope Mr. Turner never finds
out about a baseball player by
the name of Lipman Pike, for he
is the man who started it all, the
first professional baseball
player, a Jew.
People in public positions have
to be careful of what they say
and what they write. Mr.
Turner’s remarks were made
and cannot be erased. I believe
that in the heat of anger, often
the truth comes out and I
therefore believe Mr. Turner’s
remarks represent his true
feelings.

Clarifying story on Paruvian Jews
Editor:
After reading Mrs. Arlene
Peck’s personal account of
Jewish life in Peru, which
appeared in The Southern
Ik me life, and was based on her
“vast” experience of a one week
stay in Peru, we, two Peruvian
Jews attending graduate school
at Georgia Tech, considered it
necessary to clarify a few issues.
Both of us have lived all of our
lives in Peru and studied at the
Leon Pinelo school (the only
Jewish school in Lima), which
Mrs. Peck mentions in her per
sonal account. We have been
very active in community life
there, and one of us just spent a
month’s vacation in Peru.
About her comments on the
Leon Pinelo school, we would
like to point out that there ia
only one guard (not two as she
says), who does in effect carry
a gun, but it has no bullets.
These security measures (the
guard and the large fence
around the school) are due to an
Israeli principal who at the time
of the Yom Kippur War was
worried about terrorist attacks
which never materialized. There
has never been an anti-Semitic
incident and there is no under
current of anti-Semitism pre
sent in Peru.
Kidnapping, as she mentions,
may be large in a couple of South
American countries, but it cer
tainly is not in Peru. So, that
comment, is unreal as far as the
Peruvian situation is concerned.
Moreover, Mrs. Peck perceived
the mood of the people as “hav
ing no love of their country.”
This is an erroneous idea.
The reality is not lack of love
for the country, but maybe lack
of love for the actual totalitarian
government, and is not only felt
by the Jews, but by many non-
Jews as well.
Mrs. Peck also points out that
most of the Jewish children are
"scattered to the four winds
attending schools, and a large
number of them never to return
to Peru.” It is true that many
Jewish kids go to universities in
the U.S. and Israel, because of
the bad situation of the univer
sities in Peru. But we, as most of
these kids, will return to Peru
after we finish our studies.
We hope that these lines will
be helpful in clarifying the
overall picture you may have of
Jewish life in Peru, and maybe it
will encourage the readers to
come and visit our country.

Advocates strong stand against Nazis
Editor:
After reading the letter en
titled "All Violence Wrong” in
the April 15, 1977 issue of The
Southern Israelite, I was shock
ed as well as disappointed. Of
course, everyone is entitled to
his own opinion, but I feel that
most Jewish people do not have
the same opinion as Mr.
Schwartz on this issue.
The situation is bad enough
with the American Nazi Party,
but when we have our own peo
ple saying, “Just let them be,
let’s set a good example,” we’re
in big trouble. The Nazis are not
your average, everyday, American
citizens whom we can deal with
on a calm and intelligent level.
Comparing the Jews’ burning
down the Nazi book store to
Hitler’s burning of all books, is
not a correct comparison. I think
it is a disgrace that the two Jews
in San Francisco were arrested
for their actions. They should be
praised, not condemned in this
situation. Jewish people will not
be persecuted by the Nazis any
longer.
