'Good Fence' village is out ot past
Metulla 4 Thk northernmost
tip of brael projects up into
Lebanon to such a way that
Lebanese farms and villages
faee it on time aides. Little
wonder that toe opening to tbs
border, known as “The Good
Fence," is a busy scene of
humanitarian and commercial
traffic.
But veteran settlers in
Metulla tell me that the es»
There is only one street to
Metulla, and it has never had- a
name. The side tones have no
names. No house has ever had a
number. The population was
about 140 families 26 years ago,
and the number has changed lit
tle.
Metulla is a farming com
munity. Most of its population
are the direct descendants of
those who came here when the

tablishment of relations with
their Lebanese neighbors is only
a return to Urn “normalcy” that
had prevailed, unofficially, up to
1967. to the dd days, there had
been no fence at all, just open
fields, marked by an occasional
white-painted stone. The
authorities on both sides seemed
to wink at the open relations —
social, agricultural, semi
commercial, maintained by the
natives with each other on both
All that has changed, of
course. But some things in
Metulla are still the same. Pic
tures of the main street of this
little farming village, taken fifty
years «go t wuld almost, have
been snapped yesterday.. For
those who would like to see what
the old pioneering Jewish Com
munity used to look like, Metulla
is perhaps the only organism
left. It is a living museum piece,
with occasional startling
anachronisms.
JNF forest to
honor war dead
JERUSALEM (JTA) - The
Jewish National Fund is plan
ting a 10,006-tree forest com
memorating 101 members of the
Association of American and
Canadian Immigrants who have
died in Israel’s wars, the JNF an
nounced. The forest will be in
the Judaean Hills in the
Jerusalem corridor. A statue
with the names of the 101 dead
was unveiled. Five of the
children of the dead planted five
saplings marking the five wars
in which Israel has been in
volved since 1948.
Another JNF venture begun
was tiie dedication of a 12.5-acre
recreational area at the foothills
of the Carmel range known as
Shaar Ha-Carmel. The dedica
tion took place in the presence of
Moshe Rivlin, JNF board of
directors chairman, Pierre
Gildeagame, world president of
Maccabi, Louis Berold, president
of the Caeearto golf club, and
member of the JNF National
Golf of Great Britain whose
sponsorship of this recreation
area is the latest of their pro
jects. the area was dedicated in
honor of Sidney Obrsrt, presi
dent of the JNF golfers of Bri-
, tain, and his wife, Ruth.
village was founded by Baron
Edmond de Rothschild in 1896,
and there is little desire to see
the village grow. “Industry? God
forbid,” one of the settlers told
me. When the weather is
favorable, their fruit orchards
bring them a good living. Large
tracts of their original
farmlands, still registered in
their names, lie on the other side
of the Lebanese line. They used
to farm those lands until the
1949 Truce Commission closed
the border. Many still look
forward to having access to their
lands again.
The village is oriented north.
It is closer to Beirut than to
Haifa. The farmers find that the
weather forecasts of Lebanese
radio and TV are more
applicable to their needs, than
the Israel Broadcasting
forecasts for the Galilee bills.
Their good friends are the
farmers across the line and since
the opening of the Good Fence,
their main labor supply comes
through the open gate every
morning.
Tourists who are accustomed
to luxury won’t find a Hilton
here. There are five hotels rang
ing in flise from tiny to small.
Perhaps the moet enterprising is
Sheleg Halevanon (Lebanon
Snow) because it to owned and
operated by the Weinberg fami
ly, father, mother, sons and
daughters-in-law. They achieve
a homey atmosphere. The
Weinbergs are apologetic. They
came to Metulla to 1949, and are
still regarded by the closed circle
of “Mayflower pilgrims” as
foreigners and newcomers.
Reuven, still young and single, is
the active, imaginative operator
of the hotel. He has big ideas for
developing Metulla into a major
center, but the old-timers look
askance at the upstart. Though
he was born to Metulla, he to still
one of the “newcomers.”
Metulla is 1800 feet above sea
level. The climate is healthy,
warm in summer, crisp in
winter, when it serves as a
headquarters for the nearby ML
Hermon ski lift Through its
street run military equipment,
agricultural vehicles, and
private cars bearing the special
Israel license plate issued to cars
which must come through from
Lebanon and ply the roads here
Ss if they are at home.
At night one can hear the oc
casional shooting as the Chris
tian Lebanese farmers resist the
{measures of the Palestinian
terrorists. And the next mor
ning, through the Good Fence,
come not only nursing mothers
and pregnant women and the
hundreds of day workers, but
also wounded personnel, who get
instant care from Israel’s best
medical facilities.
Metulla has a Good Fence
opening up between two peoples.
It is also a Gateway for a
glimpse into a side of Israel —-
oh, so completely different from
Tel-Aviv.
