Abram defeats odds:
leukemia In remission
Morris B. Abram, above, prominent New York lawyer and
former president of Brandeis University, has been told by his
physicians that his leukemia is in remission, four years after
the disease was first diagnosed.
Mr. Abram, 59, recalls a phone'call that summoned him,
four summers ago, to the office of his family friend, and physi
cian Dr. Hyman Ashman, after what he thought was a routine
examination: “Despair was written all over his face,” Mr.
Abram said, describing the doctor as he diagnosed acute
myelocytie leukemia. “He indicated that very little could be
done about it, and he did not offer me any kind of life raft” He
underwent extensive, experimental treatment “I resolved
that in my case, the disease was not going to be fatal,” he said.
Physicians say that Mr. Abram’s ease is unusual because
patients with this disease generally do not survive this long.
Abram, a native of Fitxgerald, Ga, formerly practiced in
Atlanta.
Dayan assesses Vance, Kissinger
T£L AVIV, (JTA) - Foreign
Minister Moshe Dayan finds
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance
more straightforward to deal
with than was his predecessor,
Henry Kissinger. Asked for an

last Friday, Dayan said: “Mr.
Vance deals with problems in a

Blumberg takes Begin

TEL AVIA' (JTA) - David
Blumberg, international presi
dent of B’nai B’rith. said here
recently that he believes Pre
mier Menachem Begin will be
one of Israel’s strong and
good leaders but he does not
agree with all ot his policies.
Blumberg, who met with Begin
during a three-week visit to
Israel, said before returning to
the U. S. that he regretted
BeghTe.dedshm to legalise three
controversial settlements on the
West Bank.
The remarks by the American
Jewish leader were in reference
to the government’s action con-
fering legal status on Ofra,
Maale Edumim and Eilon Moreh
near Nablus. Blumberg said he
was optimistic about Mideast
peace prospects but warned that
peace was not around the owner.
Meanwhile, tile cornerstone of

Minister Ariel Sharon, who had
promised to attend, sent a

new settlement, to be known as
Talmei-Joseph, after Joseph

units. Each family will invest
$15,000 toward the establish
ment of orchards for sub
tropical fruits and sunflowers.
Dr. Kissinger, lees complicated
and sophisticated. With Mr.
Vance you know exactly where
you stand. His'word is a word.
Dr. Kissinger, who is more com

There is an incentive for parties
to use these strings to proceed
further. That is not so with Mr.
