“My whole family plays ten
nis,” related Harold Solomon,
the native of Washington, D.C.,
now living in Fort Lauderdale,
Fla. He was introduced to the
game by hia father, whom he
described as "a good club
player/' Solomon’s sister,
Shelley, is U.S. national cham
pion in the age-12-and-under
category. -jUTakfc,
The winners’ purses in tennis
are attractive, said the 5-foot-6,
130 pound Solomon, who earned
over $77,600 in 1976 WCT com
petition alone. Pitting himself
against other tennis pros,
however, is what the right-
handed player finds most fulfill
ing.
“I am very competitive,” he
admitted, “and I have always
liked competition.” Getting paid
to do something “I play well and
enjoy doing” is a binge benefit
of the sport, he commented, “I
don’t think about the money.”
When is he satisfied with his
o»i-court performance?
“Usually when I win,”
Solomon stated, matter of fact-
ly. “That’s the main object out
there.”
Also content “when I see Tm
improving,” Solomon acquired
his tennis reputation for his
superb ground strokes, passing
shots and returns on the serve. A
steady player who prefers
singles to doubles, he is able to
outlast many opponents, often
winning through sheer en
durance.
“I try to condition myself in
the same way as Stan Smith,”
said Solomon, who admires
Harold Solomon keeping the ball in play.
Smith’s dedication and ability
to concentrate on the game.
Before a tournament,
Solomon follows a precise — and
predictable — routine. Four
hours before competition, he!
eats. Forty-five minutes
beforehand, he warms up on the
court. Half an hour prior to play
ing, he exercises and jumps rope.
Learning to focus on the ac
tion on the court instead of in
the stands, frequently crammed
with people, is a difficult task
for Solomon. “It’s tough to do
sometimes," he said. “But you
get conditioned to it.”
What Arthur Ashe is to the
black community, Solomon
acknowledges he is to the
Jewish. (Brian Gottfried, also of
Fort Lauderdale, is the only
other Jewish tennis player of
Solomon’s professional stan
ding.) ;
The youthful athlete, having
achieved national prominence in
hia own right, is casually accept
ing of that irrepressible tenden
cy by members of his ethnic
group to take personal pride in
his tennis victories.
“I don’t think of myself as a
Jew winning a title,” Solomon
explained. “But if people derive
some happiness from that, if it
makes them feel better, then I
think that’s fine. I am just going
out and enjoying myself playing
tennis.”
He recalled an incident in
Baltimore, in which a supposed
ethnic slur was “played up way
out of proportion and eventually
retracted, but by then the
damage waa done.”
According to Solomon, he and
Ilie Nastase of Rumania, known
among other things for his sharp
tongue and quick temper, were
“kidding around in the locker
