news in Israel
Haifa — Names make the
news. And each year at this time
we present our Selection of the
ten new names which made top
news in Israel during the past
year. Once listed, a name may
not qualify again; these are new
names which hit the headlines,
for one reason or another. The
1977 listing, in alphabetical
order, and obviously affected by
the election results:
Charlie Biton, “bad boy” of
the street protest movement,
one of the founders of the Black
Panthers, Morocco-born, un
schooled, got himself elected to
the Knesset on the list of the
Democratic Front for Peace and
Equality (Communists) and is
already a colorful figure in the
parliamentary proceedings.
Simha Ehrlich, Israel’s new
Minister of Finance, who is seek
ing to solve the country’s
economic problems by bold and
that he had been guilty of finan
cial irregularities when he head
ed the Histadrut housing cor
poration. The case came to an
abrupt end with Ofer’s suicide.
Leah Rabin, wife of Israel’s
Prime Minister, whose private
account in a Washington bank,
in violation of Israel’s currency
control laws, brought about her
husband’s resignation and,
many believe, paved the way for
the defeat of Labor in the
national elections.
Rabbi Alexander Schindler,
Chairman of the Conference of
Presidents of Major Jewish
Organizations in the U.S., who
played a major role in the steps
leading to harmonious un
derstanding between the Israel
government on the one hand,
and American Jewry and the
U.S. Government on the other.
Samuel Fla to Sharon, con-

national economy.
General Amos Horev, presi
dent of the Technion, whose
recommendations for a complete
overhaul of the immigration and
absorption policies in Israel
drew widespread attention —
but have not yet been im
plemented.
Avraham Offer, Minister of
Housing, prominent in Labor
Party circles, had been the sub
ject of widely circulated charges
for the purpose of obtaining
Knesset immunity against ex
tradition — and to the surprise
of all was elected.
Yigal Yadin, Israel’s dis
tinguished archeologist, who
threw his hat into the political
ring, and led his new Democratic
Movement for Change to a com
manding in tlqe
political spectrum, the first time
a new party had managed to
reach the top three.
Aahcr Yadlin, former head of
Histadrut's Kupat Cholim,
Labor party designate as Gover
nor of the Bank of Israel, con
victed and sent to jail for
criminal financial deals with
public money from which he
profited personally, and from
which the Labor Party is also
alleged to have profited.
