With the start of Haneka on
December 4, windows in Jewish
homes throughout the world will
be enhanced by the glow of
Hanuka menorahs. The Board
of Jewish Education of Greater
New York’s World Over magazine
offers some background on the
tradition of lighting the menorah.
Each year, on the 25th of Kislev
on the Jewish calendar, the
menorah or Hanukiah is brought
out, polished and cleaned, and
placed on the window sill for the
neighborhood to see. As twilight
approaches and the first stars
appear, Jews around the world say
blessings and light the first candle.
Hanuka has then officially begun.
On each of the next seven nights
the number of candles lit is
increased by one, kindled left to
right, so that at the end of the
holiday, eight candles, plus the
Shammas, stand aflame. The
Shammas is a “helper” candle
which stands above the rest, either

in the center or to one side of the
menorah—and is used to kindle
the flame of the other eight
candles.
The lighting of the menorah
commemorates the re-dedication
of the Temple in Jerusalem by
Judah Maccabee and his
followers, who; against
overwhelming odds, fought to
practice their religious beliefs. The
Hanuka menorah is the most
important symbol of Hanuka.
Originally, Hanukiot were oil
candlesticks of all shapes.
Eventually, however, the familiar
shape of eight branches plus a
Shammas became popular.
Although the original menorahs
were kindled with oil and wicks,
today’s candles are the more
familiar source of light. The
lighting of the Hanuka menorah,
which is such a treat for children,
will be even more of a treat when
the candles are homemade. This
candle dipping recipe, which
parents and children can make
together, comes from the Board of
Jewish Education of Greater New
York.
For the candle dipping you
need:
1. 2 large empty cans (either
coffee or juice cans will do)
2 2 packages of paraffin
(obtainable at supermarket or
craft shop)
3. 1 wick for each candle
4. crayons
5. a pencil
Directions:
1. Melt the paraffin in one of the
cans by placing in a pot of hot
water over a low flame.
2 When the wax has melted, add
crayons (with the paper peeled
off), until you achieve the desired
intensity of color (the more
crayons, the deeper the color).
3. Fill the remaining can with
cold water.
4. Cut a wick to the desired
length (i.e., the length of the candle
you want to make). Tie one end to
a pencil, securely, making sure to
leave enough wick hanging for the
length of your candle.
5. Holding onto the pencil, dip
the wick into the colored wax, then
into the cold water.
6. Continue this alternate
dipping until the candle is as fat as
you want it.
7. Roll the candle on a table-top
with your fingers, to smooth out
any bumps. (Children love the feel
of warm wax.)
8. Let the candle dry until
hardened. Cut off the pencil,
making sure you leave enough
wick hanging so that the candle
can be lit.
