A Jewish Bulldog at Georgia
Louis Freedman ready to win
by David Borenstein
Number 59 on the University of
Georgia Bulldogs is a twenty year
old college junior, weighs 240
pounds, is six feet one inch tall and
starts at defensive guard. None of
these statistics is unusual for a
modern collegiate football player.
What makes Louis Freedman,
number 59 for the “Junkyard
Dogs,” special among big time
college players is that he’s Jewish.
A product of Benedictine High
School in Savannah, Louis came
to Athens without a football
scholarship. In a telephone
interview, Freedman recounted
how he jfeeived his scholarship.
“As a senior in Savannah I was not
recruited at all. But at Georgia as a
freshman I decided to go out for
the team to prove to myself that I
could play college football.” The
Savannah native obviously
impressed his coaches because they
surprised him at Thanksgiving of
his freshman year with a full
athletic scholarship.
No problems have resulted
either on or off the field because of
religion. "There have been no anti-
Semitic comments, no animosity
and no comments from opposing
teams," Freedman said.
Louis was raised in the kosher
home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Martin Freedman of Savannah.
Although eating at a training table
makes it difficult to keep kosher,
he will not eat pork or shellfish
when it is served in the McWhorter
Hall (athletic dorm) cafeteria
Louis handles this problem quite
easily, ’’When they serve
something I won’t eat 1 go back
into the kitchen and make myself a
peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”
A regular starter since the fifth
game of this past season, Louis led
the team in sacks of the
quarterback (The- same thing
Claude Humphrey does for the
Falcons) and had 61 individual
tackles.
The other Jewish students in
Athens consider Louis “Our
football player." He dates an
Atlantan who is a member of
Sigma Delta Tau sorority. At one
home game, the sorority hung a
banner proclaiming, “We love
Louis.”
Plans after graduation for the
“B” average economics major
include a career in either business
or industry. Pro football is
something Louis has not thought
about. “Right now I’m too small so
I’ll have to wait and see what
develops my senior year,” he said.
Mr. and Mrs. Freedman view
their son’s career with parental
pride and attend all home games.
Although their reactions to his
involvement have at times been
different, now his parents are his
biggest fans. “At first Mom was
against it,” Louis said. “That was
the Jewish mother in her..Now she
accepts it but still worries. My dad
has always liked it."
Louis plays football because he
enjoys it. He has not treated his
scholarship as a mere meal ticket
through college. Louis has no
special goals other than the goal
that has carried him this far—“to
always give it my best.”
