Israelis, Egyptians play golf
NEW YORK (JTA)—The new relationship between Israel and
Egypt was reflected on a golf course far from the Middle East.
According to reports from Manila, two Israelis and two Egyptians
were paired in the third round of an international golf tournament
there played Saturday. They arc Laurie Been and Barry Mandel of
Israel and Abdel Halim and Mohammed Moussa of Egypt. Such a
foursome would have been out of the question before President
Anwar Sadat’s visit to Jerusalem broke the ice between the two
countries.
Court revokes Ryan’s ball
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The European affairs department of the
Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith reported it had learned
that a German court last week revoked bail for Hermine
Braunstefacr-Ryan. the former Queens housewife who is on trial in
Dussddorf, West Germany, and placed her in jail. Mrs. Ryan and
13 others are charged with murdering inmates of the Maidenek
concentration camp during the Nazi years.
Last week, following the testimony of two Polish witnesses, she
interrupted the proceedings by calling them ’’pigs” and shouting
other phrases of abuse. Her bail was cancelled because of the
outburst.
Ex-POWs fly Jet to Egypt
TEL AVIV, (JTA)-—The Boeing 707 El Al jet selected to fly the
Israeli delegation to the Cairo conference was piloted by three
former Air Force officers who were once prisoners of war in Egypt.
Two Egyptian-born Israelis were among its six-man cabin crew.
South African Jew attacked
CAPE TOWN (JCNS)—Godfrey Isaacson, the Progressive
Federal Party’s Provincial Council candidate in Maitland, Cape
Town, South Africa, was recently dragged from his car and
attacked by two white men when he was on his way to the PFPs
campaign office.
The attack followed a series of anti-Semitic telephone calls to his
office and home. One caller threatened to shoot him at his next
public meeting.
, Jewish refusnlks arrested
NEW YORK, (JTA)-—Two leading Jewish refusniks, Vladimir
Slepak and Dr. Naum Meiman, were among a group of 20
Moscovites put under house arrest Dec. 10 to prevent them from
joining a silent Human Rights Day demonstration at Pushkin
Square, the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry and Union of
Councils for Soviet Jews reported. About 25 others, surrounded by
KGB agents, managed to gather for several minutes at the site.
ADL criticizes L.A. Bar
LOS ANGELES, (JTA)—The Los Angeles County Bar
Association (International Law Section) was sharply criticized by
the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B'rith for having excluded
Israel from its recent conference, “The Middle East: Legal and
Business Aspects.”
Ancient aqueduct unearthed
JUDEAN HILLS—A rock-cut Roman aqueduct which
supplied the ancient village of Emmaus with water, was recently
unearthed in Israel by volunteers from the Beth Shemesh high
school. The Jewish National Fund's Canada Park, situated near
Emmaus, where Judas Maccabaeus won a striking victory against
the Seleucid Greeks in 165 B.C., is yielding new finds faster than
they can be evaluated. School children-taking part in a Jewish
National Fund cultural program are aiding in the restoration of the
park’s antiquities under the supervision of trained archaeologists.

ADL needs help to fight battle
Editor:
The year 5738 and the year 1978
will be reaching a juncture and as I
wish you “Shonah Tovah” and
Happy New Year, I pray with you
for the peace that may come
sooner than we had hoped to the
Middle East.
However, there are concerns—
(are we ever without them?)—that
trouble me as they trouble you. But
we must face up to them with
resolve and courage.
The outbreak of overt Nazi
sympathy as represented in
Skokie, Ill. and Milwaukee, Wis.,
coincides with the display of Nazi
slogans and the organization of
active Bunds in West Germany.
This is not only of deep concern
but requires action to abate it or
stop it.
The recent actions directed
against peace which emana.es
from Syria, Iraq, Libya and the
PLO are frightening. Our friends
in Washington must be
encouraged to stand firm against
the flood tide of mis-statements,
misunderstanding and the
sabotage of support for Israel and
the move toward peace.
When in these times quotas are
used to provide preferential
treatment for one group that
results in discrimination for other
groups, we may be on the verge of
substituting one set of abuses for
another set. In the attempt to
preserve constitutional principles
and prevent the rise of bigotry and
misunderstanding, the Anti-
Defamation League has taken a
strong position and it needs and
will need community support—
emotionally and financially.
Finally, I must speak to you of
the continued Soviet maltreatment
of its Jewish community—of the
recent anti-Jewish actions in
Argentina and of the ever-present
possibility of anti-Semitism in our
own country. There is no new anti-
Semitism. It is the same old
vicious, ugly monster—with bad
breath, evil eye and filthy clothes
who speaks the shameful lies and
spouts the flame of hatred.
May the day come when we no
longer need your support—may
the day never come when you will
not help us fight the battle. Help us
to help fight the tide of reaction.
