Black Jews speak out

NEW YORK —Americi’s
Orthodox black Jews are coming
out of the closet.
"Black Jews have been all but
invisible on the American scene,’'
says Rabbi Avraham R. Coleman,
spiritual leader of the Orthodox
black synagogue in Brooklyn’s
Crown Heights section.
He explains:
"This was due in large measure
to the insensitivity and
misconceptions of a significant
number of black non-Jews
concerning the black Jew and his
religion.
“The fact that not a few blacks
viewed any brother or sister who
worshipped at a synagogue rather
than a church or mosque as a
traitor is not a new phenomenon.
As a result, the black Jew has been
content to hide his or her
Jewishness."
Today, however, Rabbi
Coleman writes in Haolam, a new
magazine published by and for
Orthodox black Jews, “the black

Jew—like other members of the
black community—has greater
cognizance of his roots. It is of
little consequence to us that our
brethren of like skin pigmentation
view us as traitors’ or a minority
within a minority.
“The fact is that our origins are
as old as the belief in monotheism
itself. Our spiritual ancestors are
none other than the biblical
patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob.”
Haolam is subtitled. “Orthodox
Judaism from a Black perspec
tive." Rabbi Coleman is president
and chairman of the board of the
new publication.
“The American black Jewish
community has today embarked
on a major campaign to express
their feelings on a number of
issues,” according to Rabbi
Coleman.

black Jews, the Falashas; the role
