Being Jewish
in Dawsonville
Dr. Mark and Barbara Funk
by Herb WoOncr them in addition to the actual
Dawsonville, the County seat of
Dawson County, is in the north
Georgia mountains, nestled some
where between Amicalola Falls
and DahJonega.
Dr. Mark R. Funk and his
family live in Dawsonville. To the
best of their knowledge, they are
the first Jewish family to settle in
this small rural community.
Dr. Funk is employed by the
National Health Service Corps
and until this summer, he was the
only physician in the entire county.
The Corps has now added another
doctor to help ease the burden on
Dr. Funk and to assure the area of
first rate medical attention.
There were several reasons for
choosing Dawsonville among the
many possible sites to set up a
Corps practice.
Dr. Funk said, “One of the main
reasons is that my wife's family
lives in Atlanta. It is not easy being
Jewish and living in a rural area,
but being only an hour from
Atlanta helps make the task a little
easier."
He is married to the former
Barbara Wollner of Atlanta. Her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rueven
Wollner and her grandmother,
Mrs. Mendle Boorstin, live in
Atlanta. The Funks have two
children, Michael, age four and
Amy, one.
Barbara Wollner likes the peace
and quiet of the mountains, but she
would like to become more in
volved in Jewish organizations.
There is not much to do socially in
Dawsonville and she misses the
opportunity of getting together
with other Jewish women her own

The Funks keep kosher, but
being in Dawsonville presents no
real problem. “I have to go to
Atlanta for all my meats and
holiday needs," says Mrs. Wollner.
She does not really mind because it
gives her a chance to visit friends
and family and to shop for the
things that she can not find in
Dawsonville.
Dr. Funk has not found any
Anti-Semitism in Dawson County.
He said, “Most of the people here
don't know what a Jew is and they
really don't care. They just want a
doctor to help them when they are
sick."
Why did Dr. Funk choose the
National Health Service Corps?
“I decided to join the Corps
because I felt an obligation to my
country," he says, explaining that
many of the loans and scholarships
that helped put him through
medical school were from the
Government. “I wanted to repay
repayment of monies.
“I chose the Corps over the
military because I wanted to
practice in a small rural com
munity and not have to worry
about the Army transferring me all
over the country."
A native of Chicago, Dr. Funk
received his bachelor of science
degree from the University of
Florida and his medical degree
from Emory University. He did his
residency work in internal
medicine at Kansas City General
Hospital.
Practicing medicine in a small
community is not much different
than in a big city. “We just have to
wait a little longer for tests to be
run and it is a little harder to get
certain resources up here," said Dr.
Funk.
Most of the patients that need
hospitalization are sent to
Dahlonega, a long, windy twenty
miles from his home.
Dr. Funk admits that he does see
a wider variety of cases than if he
were in a larger community. “I
know that his experience will help
me in my future practice.”
Dr. Funk wants to move to
Atlanta When his two year assign
ment is over next July.
“I like Dawsonville, but we want
our children to have a good Jewish
background and believe that it will
be much easier to give them the
Jewish education they deserve in
Atlanta." He also feels that they
need to be around Jewish children
and if he decides not to settle in
Atlanta, he will choose another
community with a large Jewish
population.
