Ellis Abrams of Atlanta has
been elected president of
Congregation Etz Chaim for
the 1977-78 term.
Vice president of the
congregation for the past two
years, Abrams is secretary
treasurer of tbe Synagogue
Council of Atlanta and is a
board member of the Atlanta
Bureau of Jewish Education.
Abrams is an attorney with
the Lawyers Title Insurance
Corporation of Atlanta. He
and his wife llene have two
sons.
Other officers elected are:
Howard Seidband and Bemie
Rice, vice presidents; Harvey
Olitsky, treasurer; Lynn
Tinkelman, Felice Seligman,
Richard Smith, secretaries.
New board members are:

Doris Goldstein Lily Nesher
AJWF women plan seminar
on fundraising techniques
Doris Goldstein of Atlanta has been appointed to head a special
solicitation techniques committee for the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation Women’s Division 1978 Campaign.
The committee will hold a training seminar led by Lily Nesher on
Wednesday, Jan. 4.
Mrs. Nesher is a leading expert in the field of worker training
and solicitation techniques. A former member of the Israeli
Foreign Ministry, Mrs. Nesher participated in several
governmental missions abroad including three missions to the
Soviet Union. She served as scholar-in-residence at the ‘77 Unicoi
Experience. *• * " **

Two members of the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center board
of directors, Raida Reish and
Harry Maziar have been selected
for Leadership Awards to be
presented at the National Jewish
Welfare Board Biennial
Convention in Montreal in April.
Paul Aronin, center president,
said “Mrs. Reish and Mr. Maziar
typify the quality leadership that
has developed in the Center in
recent years."
Raida Reish is chairperson of
the Center’s children’s committee
and formerly chairperson of the
Early Childhood Department of
the Center. She has assumed
leadership positions in major
Center programs including the
Jewish Biennial Exhibit and the
AJCC Passport to Israel. Mrs.
Reish has been a vice-president of
Shearith Israel Sisterhood and
Brandeis Women’s Committee.
She has also served as vice-
president for the Women’s
Division of Atlanta Jewish
Welfare Federation and has been
involved in Hadassah and
Women’s ORT.
Maziar is currently the treasurer
of the Center and formerly
chairperson of the Camp
Barney Medintz committee and ol
the AJCC extension committee.
He is chairman of the Jewish
Vocational Service, and.a member
of the executive committee of the
Center.
AJCC Adult Department
The Atlanta Jewish Community
Center’s adult department will
begin its winter mini-series adult
classes the week of Jan. 9.
Offerings will include ballroom
dancing, international cooking,
auto mechanics, disco dancing and
a workshop entitled "An
Intelligent Person’s Guide to
Finding a Mate."
The Center is now taking
registrations for its winter evening
classes in pottery, painting and
photography and its winter day
Classes in crafts, painting and
wheel ceramics. The classes begin
the week of Jan. 9.

Encounter
The Jewish Marriage Encounter
will sponsor a speakers' night at
8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Seminary College of
Jewish Studies
NEW YORK—The Seminary
College of Jewish Studies of the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America is now accepting
applications for tbe 1978-1979
academic year.
The Seminary College, formerly
knowj/as the Teachers Institute,
has been concentrating on
developing a liberal arts program
devoted to the study of Judaica. A
student earns the Bachelor of
Hebrew Literature degree after
completing 96 credits of liberal arts
work at another institution. Most
undergraduates are in the Joint
Program with Columbia
University.

Men’s Club will hold a “roast" and
gala dinner for its officers at 8:30
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the
synagogue.
Officers to be “roasted" are Dr.

Diamond, vice presidents; Dr.
Herbert R. Karp, treasurer; and
Joel Lobel, secretary.

Tel Chai Hadassah will hold an
open board meeting with guest
representatives of Camp Judaea at
8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the

Canna Ridge Circle.

Temple Sinai will hold its
second annual Scholar-in-
Residence Weekend with guest
scholar Rabbi Eugene B
Borowitz, January 27-29.
A noted author, educator and
lecturer. Rabbi Borowitz is widely
known as the founder and editor of
Sh'ma. A Journal of Jewish
Responsibility. He serves as
professor of education and Jewish
religious thought at the New York
School of Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion.
Rabbi Borowitz is the author of
The Masks Jews Wear, which
received the National Jewish Book
Award in 1974 in the field of
Jewish thought.
The weekend is open to the
public and will include Friday
evening and Saturday morning
services, Saturday afternoon
workshops. Saturday evening
lecture and reception, and a
Sunday morning seminar, all at
Temple Sinai.

Emil Cohen
Emil Cohen to
perform in Atlanta
Noted American-Jewish
humorist Emil Cohen will be in
Atlanta for a special one night
performance at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center at 8
p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.
A frequent performer at
Catskill resorts, including
Grossinger's and the Concord,
andfundraising functions
throughout the nation , Cohen
is recognized for his roaster of
the Yiddish idiom. The
comedian's routines include
English anecdotes about
schiemiels, schlimazels and
schleppers as well as songs
interspersed with dialects of
various nations.
Tickets for the performance
are S3 and are available in
advance at the AJCC front desk
and at the door.
Congregation Ahavath Achim
will sponsor a ’50s sock hop
featuring ‘50s juke box music and a
delicatessen buffet at 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 14, at the
synagogue.
The evening will include a
jitterbug contest, Elvis look-a-like
contest and a special return of
Ahavath Achim's “Little
t Richard." Dress is strictly 1950s.

continuing course on learning to
cope with cancer on Monday
evenings beginning Monday,

The Cobb Branch of the
National Council of Jewish
Women has received a plaque from
the March of Dimes for its
voluntary effort in the fight against
birth defects.
The Branch, inconjanction with
the Kennesaw Chapter of the
March of Dimes, recently
sponsored a youth conference
involving 55 high school students
from area counties.
The conference included
lectures, workshops and film
presentations with authorities in
the family planning, genetics and
nutrition fields.
Moderator for the conference
was Nancy Roth, chairman of the
committee. Coordinators included
Marcia Naterman, Nancy Miller,
Carol Grecnblatt, Dinah
Grollman, Barbara Edelstein,
Charmain Weber and Vicki
Youngelson.
