Directions use well-known
landmarks. So I was pleasantly
surprised when, asking for the
newly opened stalactite cave in the 1
Jerusalem Hills. I was answered:
„ “Take the Jerusalem Road
through Ein Karem, to Nes Harim;
continue through Nes Harim until
' you get to the American
Bicentennial Park. Go through the
park on the main road; continue
'down the hill towards Bet
Shemeah— and there it it, right off
the-spad"
So the Bicentennial Park has
achieved landmark status while
still in diapers! Only a year ago,
last fourth of July, over a thousand
people sat on the slope of a barren
hill to dedicate the newest park In
the Jerusalem area. ^
At that time the Jewish National
Fund spoke of a road to traverse
the park at Bet Shemesh, opening
the area to visitors and settlers of
the hill villages of Nes Harim,
Mata, Bar Giora, Mevo Betar and
Mahasiya. The road would serve
as a quick connection to Bet
Shemesh and a scenic route
throught the park.
Less than a year later, it has
become a busy thoroughfare!
Leaving Nes Harim, we got on
the new road, climbing through
mature forest groves and over
empty hills to the JNFs “Plant a
tree with your own hands" center,
where we saw people planting
under a fluttering Israeli flag, near
the commemorative wall of the
wooden cabin.
Cars were passing in both
directions; apparently, this is one
road which needs no advertise
ment. It is, after all, the only route
to the stalactite and stalagmite
cave, the hottest attraction on the
Israeli tourism scene today.
Uncovered about ten years ago by
a worker from the quarry below,
quite accidentally, the cave was
opened to the public about a half-
year ago, after extensive safety and
renovation work.
To see the cave, reservations are
accessary. At this point, with every
self-respecting Israeli aching for a
view, bookings must be made
several months in advance
(though travel agents can get you
there any day you want for an
additional fee).
Groups that form at the cave
entrance are led into an inner
courtyard a few minutes before the
tour begins. The guides are young
and pleasant, willing to answer
any questions and clearly in love
with the cave's natural beauties.
And as for the cave itself—no
words can equal nature’s surprises.
Suffice to say, it rivals any abroad,
not in sire but in the multitude of
phenomena concentrated in one
place.
The trip back is even nicer than
the way in, with time to admire the
landscape, point out partridges
scampering along the road, sit at a
table for a nosh and enjoy the
autumn air.
Then back to Jerusalem, with
some very red-cheeked, happy
children.
