A Jewish
by Arlene Peck
It is said, “All the world loves a
clown," and if that be the case, and
the amount of service constitutes
the quantity of love, then Jerry
Fields has had his share.
For 15 years Jerry has been
involved with, and the backbone
of, the Shrine Red Devils. And
today he is the first Jewish
individual to become a vice-
president of the Southeastern
Shrine Clown Association, an
association which covers a ten
state area.
I’ve known Jerry Fields for
years, and he’s always reminded
me of a Groucho Marx without the
mustache. I don’t know if it was the
cigar or the devilish glint in his
eye...but somehow the Shrine Red
Devils seem to be named for him.
When I asked him what kind of a
business is that for a nice Jewish
boy, he laughed and said the
clowning is his pleasure , one of
them anyway.
Through his Shrine involve
ment, he became enamoured with
the Clown division. Eventually, he
became president of the local
group—a diversified group of
businessmen from all walks of life.
As diverse as their businesses are,
so are the clown faces they present;
no two are the same. Jerry is
known as “Mr. Smokey.”
Although the Scottish Rite
Hospital is his favorite, Fields and
his group often visit the various
burn institutions around the
country, the Mental Retardation
Center in Augusta (which,
incidentally is the reason for the
State of Georgia’s giving Jerry and
his group an award for
outstanding service), the Shrine
Circus and once he even had the
thutzpa to fly to Iowa as “Mr.
Smokey" to attend a clown
convention.
His awards have been
numerous. Among them are the
Atlanta Braves Al Thompson
Humanitarian Award. Its two
previous winners were Phil Niekro
and Pat Jarvis. Twice he has been

clown
voted by his peers as among the top
ten clowns in the Southeastern
states and in 1977 was voted as
“Outstanding Clown of the Year."
More than the awards has been
the reward of giving the kids in
these hospitals for crippled
children or the retarded a feeling
that someone c&res. “Once, while
visiting a hospital in Kentucky I
stopped by the bed of a kid in a cast
from neck to toes. The pain that
she was in was bad enough that
she had nothing to smile about.
But, smile she did while we joked
together.” And that about sums up
the reason for the “Red Devils.”
Jerry also has been city-wide
chairman of the Jewish War
Veterans-Fulton Masonic Lodge
Joint Blood Drive for the past
fifteen years. Incidentally it
includes all of Atlanta’s
synagogues and is the oldest
consecutive blood drive in the
history of the American Red
Cross. He is also past president of
the Atlanta Braves Booster Club,
past commander of Jewish War
Veterans, past president of Atlanta
Jewish Rational Fund Council,
and regional governor of AEPi
Fraternity. Jerry is married to the
former Janis Leff who holds down
the fort at their real estate
company while he is on his tours.
They have four sons: Kenny 23,
Eddie 21, Ronnie 19 and Andy 16.
