The Campaign leadership of the
1978 Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation will meet on Sunday,
Jan. 8, from 1-4p.m. at theTerrace
Garden Inn, for a seminar
organized for campaign personnel.
Gerald Cohen, general

Rabbi Friedman, former
executive chairman of the United

authority on Jewish overseas needs
and Israel's refugees and

A resident of Israel, he provides
one of the vital links between fund
raising efforts in the United States
and the programs these funds
make possible. A graduate of
Hebrew Union College, Rabbi
Friedman served as chaplain in
Germany in 1945 where he
spearheaded efforts to help Jewish
survivors of the Nazi death camps.
Rabbi Herbert Friedman

Young Leadership Cabinet.
Four members of the UJA
Young Leadership Cabinet will

NEW YORK (JTA)—The
Soviet Jewry Research Bureau of
the National Conference on Soviet
Jewry reported that the number of

USSR from January-November
1977 surpasses the number of Jews
allowed to leave in 1976.
Charlotte Jacobson, hureau
chairperson, announced that from
January-November 1977, 14,798
Soviet Jews have emigrated to
Israel and eleswhere while the total

..coming months. Analysts have
suggested that the increase in those
being allowed to emigrate in the
last few months is due to
discussions in Belgrade hy those
countries signing the Helsinki
Final Act, which includes
provisions for the free emigration
of all people."
She pointed out: “Though 1977
figures will surpass last year’s total,
they do not approach the peak
years of 1972-1973 when more
than 66,000 Soviet Jews left the
USSR. Soviet authorities arc
continuing harassment against
thousands of Soviet Jewish
activists who wish to leave, many
of whom applied for exit visas
more than five years ago. At the
same time anti-Semitic remarks
are carried in the Soviet media and
Soviet Jewish activist Anatoly
Shcharansky is still being held in
Moscow's Lefortovo prison
pending completion of the Soviet
authorities’ investigation."
