Southern Jewish past
VALDOSTA, Ga—The
Southern Jewish Historical
Society is a reality after a year of
planning, according to Dr. Louis
Schmier, Valdosta State College
history professor and vice
president of the new organization.
“The launching effort was a
conference oh southern Jewish
history held at Raleigh, N.C., and
attended by ISO enthusiastic
professional historians and
genealogists, as well as laymen
from all walks of life, both Jews
and Gentiles,'' Dr. Schmier said.
“They came from as far away as
California, Texas, Ohio,
Massachusetts, but the majority
were from Maryland, the
Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia,
Florida, Louisiana, Texas,
Alabama and Mississippi. For the
formation of this organization is a
reflection of the return of Southern
pride.
?In particular, there’s a need to
Offset what’s called a 'northern
bias,' and the Society hopes to
serve a number of functions in this
area—to promote interest in
scholarship in the southern Jewish
experience integral to the history
of the south, to establish a journal
on southern Jewish studies, to
sponsor annual conferences in key
southern cities, to help various
families and congregations
discover their history and preserve
their records, to promote an oral
history project and to offer
consultation services to those
interested in studying the nature
and extent of the Jewish
experience in the south.”
An archives in southern Jewish
history is a dream for the future, he
added.
“Our more immediate aims are
to secure Financial support and to
maintain the interest and
involvement that was exhibited at
the conference," he said.
“The Society is not restricted to
professional historians, as those
who presented papers illustrate.
They were delivered by rabbis,
retired school teachers outside the
history field, physicians. And there
are a number of businessmen
involved in the organization.”
Rabbi Sol Rubin of Savannah is
president of the board of trustees,
which includes Abram Kanof, a
Raleigh physician; Saul Viener, a
Richmond, Va., businessman;
Solomon Briebart of Charleston,
S.C., a retired teacher, and Mrs.
Jerome Zimmerman, an Atlantan
