WASHINGTON, (JTA)???Two
major disputes with the Carter
Administration face Israeli
Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan
and Premier Menachem Begin in
Washington this week and next.
They are the U.S. ire over Israel???s
settlement policy in the West Bank
and Israel's anger over being
included with Egypt and Saudi
Arabia in an aircraft sales package.
The Israeli Foreign Minister
strongly protested the arms deal in
his meeting with Vance.
Vance, in turn, was expected to
bring up Begin???s statement at
Kiryat Arba in Hebron Monday in
which the Premier told the 350
Jewish families living there that
they will be joined in the coming
years by hundreds of Jewish
families.
Begin will be in Washington
Monday as a guest of honor at a
reception given by President
Carter to celebrate Israel???s 30th
anniversary. From 600 to 1,000
American Jewish leaders are being
invited to the reception, which is
seen here as an attempt by the
Carter Administration to patch up
its dispute with Israel in an efTort
to get the stalled Mideast
negotiations moving again. There
will no doubt be a private meeting
between Begin and Carter at some
point during the reception.
The focus of attention will be on
the arms deal. White House Press
Secretary Jody Powell said
Monday the Administration
believes that ???we have the support
on the Hill to defeat any portion of
the proposed sale.??? The House and

However, the leaders of the

Being able to eat crispy matzo
with butter and salt or cream
cheese spread all over makes a lot
of Jewish people look forward to
Passover. ,
But this year many people were
disappointed when they
approached their local grocery
store and were faced with empty
shelves where matzo used to sit.
No, it was not your imagination.
You were not in the wrong aisle.
This year many Atlanta and
Southeastern grocery stores ran
out of matzo and other Passover
goods even before Passover began.
Several grocery stores surveyed
by The Southern Israelite said the
shortage stemmed from a
combination of factors. First of all,
more people bought matzo and
then grocery stores couldn't get
any additional matzo from the
Southeastern distributor.
???A major product category
changed distributors in Atlanta
this year. The new distributor was
not properly advised of the
potential of the product.
???It wasn't just the matzo. I don't
have a cookie or cake mix for
Passover on my shelves,??? Alfred
Solomon of So-Lo Foods said.
Solomon also learned from
distributors that more matzo was
bought this year than ever before,
possibly because there is a greater
???awareness.??? Solomon pointed out
that it might have had something
to do with the showing of the film
???Holocaust" on television recently.
???I was out of all matzo the
Friday before Passover was to
begin. Most years I have matzo left
over afterwards. As far as I know
there is no matzo in Atlanta now. I
was out of egg matzo two weeks
before Passover. Everyone is upset
and 1 think they have a right to be.
1 feel I have a responsibility to my
customers but 1 tried everything
and couldn't get any more. This
has never happened before. It???s
wrong and I feel terrible about it,???
Solomon said.
David Alterman of the Food
Giant grocery store chain also had
matzo problems this year.
???We ran out the Friday before
the first seder. When we went to
the distributor, he didn't have any
more," Alterman said.
Alterman said he has sold 29
peroent more matzo this year than
last and has some ideas about the
sudden upsurge.
???I think the time of the year, the
situation in Israel and the
???Holocaust" show might have
been indirectly responsible for
increased observance," Alterman
said.
Supreme Foods, Southeastern
distributor for Manischewitz and
Streit???s, told The Southern
Israelite, that they ordered, 25
percent more matzo this year than
matzo shortage!
last and all of it was sold.
???To be honest, there is not a
matzo shortage. This year for some
reason there has been a resurgence
and more people buying. We
ordered 25 percent more and we
were still out. It???s a hard thing to
figure. Grocery stores throughout
the Southeast ran out. Nationally
more people are buying matzo this
year.
???Last Friday 1 was out of matzo
and so a dispatcher was sent to
Manischewitz. Unfortunately he
was late and Manischewitz was
closed early Friday for Passover.
There was no shortage as far as the
manufacturer is concerned,??? Alan
Kaplan of Supreme Foods said.
Kaplan feels most consumers
got matzo because so much was
sold and indicated that a few
grocery stores did not actually run
out. Next year, though, he will
???make sure??? and intends to order
even more.
???Next year I???ll probably order
heavier and get hung,??? Kaplan
added.
And so, feel fortunate if you
were one of those lucky souls who
found matzo on the shelves after
Passover had begun. As Alfred
Solomon put it: ???You should have
seen the Jewish people looking for
Passover goods. It was like they
were lost in the Negev looking for
an oasis. Passover merchandise
was like gold this year.???
You may have
looked .. .
but you didn???t find!
