Let’s Talk About Wealth
i©S
If you could look inside the investment port
folios of many rich people you would see how
they acquired their wealth Over the years they
purchased the common stocks of established
corporations that nonetheless were growing at
above-average rates. These people held on to
their shares through good markets and bad. They
resisted speculating in passing fads. They under
stood that in the longer course of time these
stocks would significantly appreciate in value
and provide them with a source of dividend
income.
Individuals serious about accumulating wealth
can follow the same path today.
Tri Southern Equities, Inc., of Atlanta was
organized in 1974 to work with individuals and
trusts to develop systematic investment pio-
grams Our firm combines professional brokerage
and securities-research capabilities. Since we
started we've analyzed the performance of
hundreds of corporations. But only a few have
met our investment criteria. In fact, we have
placed only 13 stocks on our recommended list.
These stocks have appreciated in value an
average of 103 percent. While the Dow (ones
industrials have declined 12 percent *

Quietly and with a minimum of
fuss, a revolution has been taking
place in the Israel Defense Forces
during the past two years—girl
soldiers have been taking over an
increasing number of duties
formerly performed exclusively by
men.
The reason, says Colonel Dalia
Raz, 41, the commander of the
Women’s Corps, is a simple one.
The IDF needs to make more
effective use of available
womanpower and manpower. “It
was definitely not a revolution
begun under the banner of
Women’s Lib.”
Just the same, the effect of the
IDFs quiet revolution has been to
restore a sense of challenge to the
women serving in the IDF and to
increase their self-respect.
They had felt for some years that
the tasks they had to perform were
not challenging or fulfilling
enough, and that less was being
asked of them than of their male
colleagues.
Except for a very short period
during the War of Independence in
1948, women have never served in
combatant roles. Generally
speaking, the tradition had grown

up that eighteen-year-old girls
called up for their two years of
national service were given office,
social welfare or teaching jobs.
Of the total of 800 defined jobs
in the IDF, only some 200 were
open to girls. They found this
frustrating and damaging to their
self-esteem. They wanted more
responsible, demanding and varied
duties to perform.
The IDFs need to make much
better use of its conscripts and its
decision to do so, coincided with
the strong feeling among girl
soldiers (and girls in the Air Force
and Navy) that they could play a
much bigger part in the IDF.
During the past two years, the
situation has changed radically.
Almost every duty except actual
fighting has been thrown open to
women. So keen to see more and
better qualified women in
responsible jobs are the senior
officers of the IDF, says Colonel
Raz, that they are sometimes
ahead of the women.
“The girls are sometimes not
quite ready to strike out in all the
new directions available to them
now," Colonel Raz added.
But, while many still serve as
secretaries, in the medical corps, in
intelligence and in communi
cations units, others are now
driving heavy vehicles and serving
as naval gunnery instructors.
Still others are serving as air
mechanics, air controllers, radar
specialists, welders, mechanics and
weapons technicians.
Tami, a 21-year-old sergeant,
was one of the first qualified
women air controllers in the Air
Force.
She said that, “at first, pilots
were startled when they heard my
voice over the radio, but I don’t
think they minded taking
instructions from a girl.
“In fact, as long as I do my job
properly, I think they quite like the
idea. Anyway, it’s certainly
accepted as normal now.”
Another sergeant, 22-year-old
Mira, is a computer technician.
She had always been technically
minded, she told me, and her
parents encouraged her to attend
a technical school.
“When I was called up, the last
thing I wanted to be was a
secretary. Of course, someone has
to do the secretarial work, and it is
important as well, but not to me,”
she said.
Few girls, however, want the
IDF to go the whole way and post
girls to combat units or those
doing heavy manual work. “I don’t
think that girls can do hard
physical jobs," Yosefa, 19, a naval
radar operator said.
Mira agreed, adding that
posting women to combat units
would be tantamount to “denying
the difference? which do exist
between men and women."
One difference is that men
conscripts have to do three years’
national service, while women
have to do only two. In addition,
girls who are Orthodox or come
from a traditional home can obtain
exemption—and 25 percent of
them do so.
A further 20 percent are rejected
because their standard of
intelligence and performance is too
low. This means that only 55
percent of 18-year-old girls are
available for national service.
