Need for professionalism cited by
new private security corporation
Robert D. Gordon, of
Atlanta, along with his
brother Howard Gordon, of
Marietta, have recently
joined together and formed
a new private security
company, known as First
Security Corporation. In a
recent interview, Robert,
President of First Security,
stated “The private
watchman of yesterday is
rapidly disappearing. State
governments know it and
many are passing legislation
requiring certain standards
that must be met by private
security personnel.”
Robert made several
important points about the
growing need of profession
ally trained security officers
in today’s business world.
“First and foremost, hiring
procedures must utilize
strict standards in the
screening of potential
employees. This includes a
thorough background
investigation on all
applicants. Also, all
applicants must have their
fingerprints and photo
graphs processed by state
authorities and checked for
any criminal record. The
second critical need is a
comprehensive training
program, with periodic
upgrading and re-training to
handle the changing needs
of the clients. Thirdly,
qualified supervision must
be included at all levels. To
this end, we try and have a
supervisor visit each security
officer at least once per shift.
The fourth area is the one
which most companies
overlook and yet is critical
to the long term, sucessful
operation of any security
service, namely; employee’s
salaries. We pay our men
and women rates that are
among the highest in the
industry.”
Robert feels that the
catalyst which makes his
operation successful is the
continued contact he
maintains with his clients
after the sale has been made.
This sensitivity to their
changing needs is responsi
ble for lessening the yearly
changeover of security
companies that most
businesses are forced to get
used to.
Robert Gordon, a relative
newcomer to the Atlanta
are, feels this area is ready
for a competent private
security service. “Our
feasability study told us that
many businesses were ready
for, and in fact, had looked
for, a dependable full service
private security company.
“In addition to providing
uniformed security officers,
FSC provides investigative
services, undercover
operatives, and shopping
services, which specialize in
internal theft detection.
Prior to re-locating here,
Robert ran a security service
in Connecticut with over
two hundred security
officers and investigators.
He states that the problems
business is faced with in
protecting their assets here
are basically the same as
they were in New England,
with internal or employee
theft accounting for over
75% of all shortage.
Howard Gordon, who has
lived in the Atlanta area for
six years, and currently
devotes most of his time to
the ownership and opera
tion of Gordon Construc
tion Company, is an active
member of Etz Chaim
synagogue, where he is
currently chairman of the
Constitution and ByLaws
Committee. Howard is a
1969 graduate of the
University of Connecticut
School of Law, after which
he served four years with the
U.S. Army Judge Advocate
General’s Corps., as a
Captain, specializing in U.S.
Army government con
tracts. After tours in Texas
and Vietnam, Howard’s last
tour of duty was here in
Atlanta at Fort McPherson,
during which time he and his
wife Ruth decided to make
Atlanta their home.
First Security Corpora
tion is located at 3110 Maple
Drive N.E., Atlanta, which
allows it to conveniently
serve the five county greater
metropolitan Atlanta area.
