Eizenstat sees plane
sales as a real plus!
by Vida Goldgar
Presidential Aide Stuart
Eizenstat turned his attention from
domestic to foreign affairs
Tuesday night in Atlanta to voice
his support of President Carter???s
controversial plane sale package.
Eizenstat called the sale of F-5
and F-15 planes to Egypt and
Saudi Arabia ???in the best interests???
of this country and of Israel, and
???essential to the stability of the
Middle East."
The former Atlantan, who has
become one of the president???s most
respected advisors, made his
remarks to a gathering of some 500
persons at a Jewish National Fund
tribute to Cantor Isaac and Betty
Goodfriend.
Eizenstat explained his feelings
by saying, ???To my mind, it is far
better for the United States and
Israel to have Israel's moderate
Arab neighbors look toward the
United States and not countries
which are hostile to Israel.???
Begin sees clearer skies
in U.S.-lsrael relations
by Yitzhak Rabi
LOS ANGELES, (JTA) ???
Israeli Premier Menachem Begin
told reporters aboard his plane
Monday that ???there is a change for
the better in the atmosphere of
relations between the United
States and Israel.??? Begin made
these remarks after his talks in
Washington with President
Carter and Secretary of State
Cyrus Vance on his way to Los
Angeles.
The Israeli Premier expressed
???cautious optimism??? that the peace
process in the Middle East could
be renewed as a result of his talks in
Washington. Clearly satisfied and
in a sharp contrast to his
unhappiness after his visit to
Washington in March, Begin did
not go into details of his talks with
the President. He only said that he
spoke ???about essentials.???
The government of Israel will
discuss ???in the next few weeks???
serious issues and then ???we shall be
in touch" with the United States
government. Begin said. Foreign
Minister Moshe Dayan, after his
talks with Vance last week, also
said that there were questions that
would now have to be answered by
the Israeli Cabinet.
???There is a hope for another
productive effort to make the
peace process possible," Begin told
reporters on the plane. Relaxed, in
shirt sleeves, with Ambassador
Simcha Dinitz next to him, the
Premier repeatedly stressed his
delight over the friendly attitude he
found in Washington.
Fowler against plane sales
WASHINGTON ??? A resolution opposing the Carter
administration's proposed sale of jet aircraft to Israel, Egypt and
Saudi Arabia was introduced Tuesday by 22 of 37 members of the
House International Relations Committee.
Georgia Congressman Wyche Fowler was one of those
supporting the resolution to block the proposed jet sale. Fowler
said he specifically objected to the sales to Saudi Arabia and Egypt,
which he felt were "not in the best interests of the United States or
in the best interests of peace in the Middle East."
Stuart Eizenstat
While obviously hoping to
reassure the audience of Carter???s
continued support for Israel,
Eizenstat was just as obviously
urging ???flexibility."
Noting that the current
disagreements between the United
Slates and Israel do not override
the deep friendship and
presence on portions of the West
Bank; and
Israel should not be compelled
to totally withdraw from all of the
occupied territories.
???However,??? Eizenstat added, ???It
is important that both sides
continue to make concessions.
That applies to Egypt and it
applies to Israel.???
In his opening remarks,
Eizenstat brought a warm
response from the hometown
audience when he talked about the
special meaning the Jewish
National Fund ???Blue Box??? has in
his own life. ???It (the Blue Box) was
always in my house when I was
growing up and it is in our home
today. Every Friday night we make
a contribution.??? He confided that a
JNF tree certificate sits in
President Carter???s office, ???as a gift
of my children."
Eizenstat, who was accompa
nied by his wife Fran, gave a
moving tribute to the Cantor and
Mrs. Goodfriend. The crowd and
j corppitment to Israel???s security, he other program participants
said, ???1 tfrink it is more important provided a mass outpouring of
Begin described Carter???s
statements at the reception for
Jewish leaders on the White House
lawn as ???one of the most important
statements??? made by the
President. Begin said the
friendship between Israel and the
U.S. is ???very profound.???
Later, after his formal chat with
reporters, Begin walked up and
down the aisle and spoke with
Israeli reporters in Hebrew. He
said that during his talks in
Washington there was no mention
by the Administration of a
referendum on the West Bank after
five years of self-rule. The
Administration in the past said
that Begin???s proposal for self-rule
for the Palestinians in the West
Bank and Gaza should be assessed
after five years by the local
residents who should determine
their own future.
The Premier indicated that the
Carter Administration is signalling
that another solution should be
searched for after five years and
that the Israelis should come up
with new ideas on the future of the
West Bank.
The plane is an Israel Air Force
cargo plane with the markings
IAF-008 on its side. It had the
normal passenger airline seats
installed for the Premier???s trip.
Begin and his wife. Aliza, along
with Dinitz and other aides, sat in a
curtained off section in front
to dwell on those things we do
agree on.???
Four major areas of agreement
he cited were:
No independent Palestinian
state;
Just and meaningful peace with
open borders and an end to the
Arab embargo,
An indefinite Israeli security
affection for the Goodfriends and
appreciation of the role they have
played in strengthening not only
JNF, but almost every area of
Judaism.
A recreation area and
playground in Israel is being
established by the Jewish National
Fund in their honor. Cantor
