80,000 books stocked for Brandeis sale
More than 80,000 used books
will find new homes during the
12th annual Brandeis Used
Book Sale to be held May 13
through 18, at the Sears
parking lot in Buckhead. Sale
hours are 7-10 p.m. on opening
night, Saturday, May 13, and
10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the
remainder of the sale week.
Books include hardcovers
and paperbacks in more than 40
categories, with sheet music,
magazines and records also
available.
There are also rare books.
first editions and collectors
items. Some are auctioned off
on a closed bid basis but on
many occasions bargain
hunters have found valuable
editions on open stacks selling
at regular prices.
Proceeds from the sale help
support library services at
Brandeis University, Waltham,
Mass.

Atlanta Lodge B'nai B’rith will
host an all-you-can-eat buffet
luncheon with guest speaker
Coach Hubie Brown, of the
Atlanta Hawks, 12 noon,
Wednesday. May 17, at the
Progressive Club.
Brown, who will review the
Hawks’ successful past season, will
be given a special presentation
from the Atlanta Lodge, for his
efforts in the, past season.
An autographed basketball
signed by the Hawks will be
awarded as a door prize.

Blood Drive
Atlantan Cliff Oxman, an
active supporter of the value of
donating life sustaining blood,
recently donated his 42nd pint
of blood. Oxman’s contri
bution is not uncommon,
though. With one out of 80
people requiring blood each
year, many people far exceed
Oxman’s donations.
Oxman reflects the many
donors supporting the Jewish
War Veterans and Fulton
Lodge Blood Drive, taking
place from 9 a m. to 2 p.m.,
Sunday, May 7, at Ahavath
Achim Synagogue.
All eligible donors are urged
to contribute.

Jenice Schaeffer of Atlanta was
crowned Sweetheart of Judah
AZA for 1978 at its recent
Sweetheart Dance.
The chapter’s Sweetheart Court
also included Lisa Holtz, Karen

Woolf.

Mother’s Day Sabbath
The Sisterhood of Congregation
Beth Jacob will join UOJCA
Women’s Branches throughout the
nation in observing Mother's Day
Sabbath on the Sabbath preceding
Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 13.
The commemoration will focus
on one of the Women’s Branch’s
key projects, to provide an electric,
twin-branched candelabra to
hospitalized Jewish women sothat
they may fulfill the mitzva of
candlelighting without violating
hospital fire codes. Sisterhoods
and individual members of the
Branch will donate candelabras to
their local hospitals.
Women’s Branch UOJCA is the
only national group which unites
the women of Orthodox
congregations in America and
Canada ' for direction to Torah
goals.

Atlanta to observe Israel Week
In conjunction with Israel Independence Week, May 7-13,
celebrating Israel's 30th Anniversary, Atlanta Hamagshinim and
Atlanta Hillel Federation will sponsor a variety of Israeli cultural
activities on Atlanta's campuses throughout the week.
Activities for Atlanta’s Israel Week will include films, speakers,
exhibits, discussions, foods, arts and crafts and live entertainment.
Beginning the week long commemoration will be the showing of
the film “The Witness,” at 8 p.m., Sunday, May 7, at the Emory
Hillel House. Being presented to mark the observance of Yom
Hashoa, Holocaust Memorial Day, the film was compiled from
footage taken by the Germans in the Warsaw Ghetto between 1940
and 1943.
On Monday, May 8, one of Israel’s leading entertainers, Ron
Eliron will appear in concert at 8 p.m., at Emory’s Woodruff
Medical Administration Building Auditorium. A reception
featuring free felafel and Israeli dancing will follow the concert.

Dr. Kenneth Stein, History Professor at Emory, will address a
lunchtime crowd at noon on Tuesday, May 9, at the Emory Coke
Lounge, in the AMUC.
Later that evening an Israeli dinner theatre featuring the Israeli
musical “Kazablan” and complete with an authentic Israeli meal
will be presented at 7 p.m., at the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center. The dinner will be served in the traditional atmosphere of
an Israeli restaurant.
An Israeli cultural exhibit table will be set up from 12 to 3 p.m.
on Wednesday, May 10, at Emory’s AMUC Coke Lounge
The film classic “Cast a Giant Shadow,” starring Kirk Douglas
in the true life story of David “Mickey” Marcus, the American
soldier who became an Israeli general, will be shown at 8 p.m. on
Wednesday evening, at the Emory White Hall Learning Center,
Room 205. The film will be shown again at 8 p.m., on Thursday, at
the Georgia Tech Student Center, Room 320.
A special community Shabbat dinner will be held at the Emory
Hillel House on Friday evening. May 12. For reservations call 329-

Winding up the week's celebration will be an authentic Israeli
Disco at 8 p.m., on Saturday evening, at the Emory Coke Lounge.
The evening has been designated B Y.O.G., Bring Your Own
Garinim (sunflower seeds).
